Frederik Vesti (born 13 January 2002) is a Danish racing driver[1][2] competing in the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship[3] for ART Grand Prix alongside Aleksandr Smolyar. He is the inaugural champion of the Formula Regional European Championship and a member of the Mercedes Junior Team.

Racing career[]

Lower formulae[]

Vesti started his career in Danish Formula Ford.[4] After finishing 4th in 2016 he moved on to compete full-time in both the German and Danish Formula 4 Championships. Despite missing two events of the Danish Championship the Danish driver managed to finish 2nd in his debut F4 season, helping his team Vesti Motorsport to win the team championship.[5][6] In 2018 he would yet again compete in the German F4 Championship and make appearances in the 2018 Italian F4 Championship, where he won two out of the three races he competed in, and the European Formula 3 Championship.[7][8][9]

Formula Regional European Championship[]

Prema Powerteam signed Vesti to compete in the inaugural Formula Regional European Championship.[10] After 13 victories, with six of them being achieved back-to-back, and a total of 20 podium finishes Vesti won the championship in front of Ferrari Academy driver and teammate Enzo Fittipaldi. They, along with British driver Olli Caldwell helped Prema to win the team championship.[11]

FIA Formula 3 Championship[]

In 2020 Vesti continued to drive for Prema, this time progressing to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, partnering Formula Renault Eurocup champion Oscar Piastri and American Logan Sargeant.[12] The Dane's first win came at the second round of the year in Styria, a race, which was cut short due to bad weather conditions.[13] Following that, Vesti would not score a podium until finishing in second at Spa-Francorchamps.[14] Vesti had a strong end to the season however: two feature race victories at Monza and Mugello helped the Danish driver to reach fourth in the drivers' standings.[15] His performances helped the team retain the teams' championship.

Vesti at the Red Bull Ring in 2021

Vesti would sign for ART Grand Prix to race in Formula 3 alongside Russian Aleksandr Smolyar and American Juan Manuel Correa.[16] After an underwhelming start to the season, in which the Dane only managed to score one podium from six races, Vesti would finish second in the second race at the Red Bull Ring, and won the third race of the same round, narrowly beating out championship leader Dennis Hauger. However, his next podium of the season would come at Zandvoort in race 2, at which point he was mathematically out of the running for the title. Vesti finished second in the final race of the season at Sochi, thus taking enough points to repeat his previous year's championship finish of fourth place.

FIA Formula 2 Championship[]

Vesti got his first taste of Formula 2 machinery when he participated in the post-season test in 2021 with ART alongside former F3 title rival Théo Pourchaire.[17]

Formula One[]

On the 19th of January 2021, Vesti was announced as a Mercedes Junior Team driver.[16]
