Galina Rodionovna Lukashenko (Belarusian: Галіна Радзівон��ўна Лукашэнка, romanized: Halina Radzivonaŭna Łukašenka, Russian: Галина Родионовна Лукашенко), née Zhawnyarovich (Belarusian: Жаўняровіч, Russian: Желнерович, romanized: Zhelnerovich) is the wife of the Belarusian President, Alexander Lukashenko and is the current First Lady of Belarus.[1] Galina is estranged from Alexander who has had at least one extra-marital affair that produced a son, Nikolai.

Biography[]

She was born on New Year's Day in 1955 in the family of Rodion Georgievich Zhelnerovich (1928-1983) from Brest and Elena Fedorovna Zhelnerovich (1929-2019)[2] from Slutsk.[3] She met Alexander Lukashenko while still in high school in the village of Ryzhkovichi, and married him in 1975, upon graduation from the Mogilev Pedagogical Institute (now Mogilev State University).[4][5] At this time, she worked in a kindergarten. Since January 1998, she has been the head of the department of the Mogilev Regional Executive Committee for the Improvement of the Population.

She did not move with her husband to Minsk at the beginning of his presidential career, instead living on Zemlyanichnaya Street in Shklow, where she has since lived.[6] She does not accompany her husband at public events and reportedly rarely sees him.[7] One of the earlier moments when the couple was seen together was the year Lukashenko was elected, when he was on a state visit to Israel.[8]

Unlike her husband or her sons, Galina is among the Lukashenko family not on the sanctions list by either the United States or the European Union.
