Getnet Wale Bayabl (born 16 July 2000) is an Ethiopian runner specialising in the 3000 metres steeplechase.[2] He represented his country at the 2017 World Championships finishing ninth in the final. He also won a bronze medal at the 2016 World U20 Championships. His personal best in the event is 8:05.21 set in Doha in 2019.[3]

Early life[]

Getnet Wale was born one of eight children in Sekele, Ethiopia. Getnet ran 4 km to and from school. After winning the provincial titles at 1500m and 3000m aged 13 steeplechase coach Teshome Kebede was interested in Getnet and invited him to Addis Ababa with him.[4]

Early Running Career[]

Getnet's first international competition came at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Despite falling twice[5] at the water jump Getnet earned the bronze medal placing 3rd in 8:22.83.[6]

In 2017 Getnet competed at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics making the final and placing 9th in 8:25.28.[7]

In 2018 Getnet competed at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, where he placed 3rd in 8:26.16.

In 2019 Getnet contested 9 3000m steeplechase races including Diamond League wins in Rabat and Brussels. At the 2019 World Championships in Athletics Getnet placed 4th in the 3000m steeplechase final in a personal best time of 8:05.21.

In 2020 Getnet only raced one steeplechase after an indoor track season. He race at the steeplechase at the Monaco Diamond League and placed 10th in 8:35.85.

Possible transition to 5000m[]

On 16 January 2021 Getnet placed 2nd in the Olympic candidate trial competition in Addis Abeba. On 9 February 2021, Getnet ran a 7:24.98 in the 3000 metres in Liévin, France, which is the second fastest all-time indoor time for the event, behind Daniel Komen's 7:24.90 from 1998.[8] On 11 April Getnet won the Ethiopian Championships at 5000m. On 19 May Getnet won the 3000m steeplechase at the 60th Ostrava Golden Spike in 8:09.47. At the Ethiopian Trials on 8 June in Hengelo, Netherlands Getnet won the 5000m in 12:53.28. Getnet was named for the Ethiopian Olympic Team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in the 5000m.[9]
