Grêmio F.B.P.A. Academy is the youth set up of Grêmio. Is composed of several youth teams from the age group of under-7 to the under-21, and is considered one of the most prolific football academies in Brazil as also in the world.
Notable academy graduates in recent years include 2002 FIFA World Cup winner and two-time FIFA Ballon d'Or recipient Ronaldinho, Brazil national team and Grêmio winger Douglas Costa, Juventus midfielder Arthur, Russia national team and CSKA Moscow defender Mário Fernandes, Lazio midfielder Lucas Leiva, UEFA Champions League winner midfielder Anderson, Benfica winger Everton, 2016 Summer Olympic Games Gold Medal forward Luan alongside many first team players, such as midfielder Matheus Henrique and forward Ferreira.
The club has a large academy training complex, named CT Presidente Hélio Dourado, based in Eldorado do Sul, in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, which includes a small stadium where all the youth teams play their home matches.
Under-21[]
Grêmio's under-21 team is intended to provide further development for young players in the transition from the youth setup to professional football. The squad is made up of under-21 players. During the season, the under-21 regularly plays in the first tier of the Campeonato Brasileiro de Aspirantes, a under-23 national competition. Until March 2021 this young squad was named Transition team, being a sub-23 squad where the players were prepared to be used in the first team squad. Due to the delay in the use of young players, who were up to 23 years of age as part of the Academy, Grêmio opted to reorganize their academy by extinguishing the under-23 squad, thus maintaining only the under-21 squad and speeding up the promotion of young players.[2] After that, players over 21 years old are promoted to the first team squad or negotiated with other clubs, being loaned to gain experience. Their current head coach is Cesar Lopes.
