History[]

During the 15th Century, Groppo was already a municipality, endowed with its own statutes.[1] It became part of the Riolunato municipality quite lately; in 1845 still belonged to the Pievepelago community, one of the five communities in which was divided the Frignano territory (the other ones were: Pavullo, Fanano, Sestola e Fiumalbo).[2] In 1786-87, a great landslide affected the hamlet, reaching even the Scoltenna creek.

Among the people, natives of Groppo, who had some notoriety we can mention: Father Claudio Fini, famous in the second half of the XVI century as theologian and preacher, a witness of the holiness of St. Aloysius Gonzaga;[3] Saverio Cabonargi, follower of Mazzini, who animated the participation of the Frignanese mountain in the 1831 Modena revolution and Luigi Cabonargi (d. 1852), doctor in Rome, a friend of Stendhal.[4]

During the final phase of the Second World War, the Groppo territory was located just north of the Gothic line; during these years happened the fall, on the heights near the town, of an American reconnaissance aircraft: the body of the pilot, Paul M. Thorngren, born in Boone (Iowa), was temporarily buried near the parish church and now rests in the .[5]

In the same years took place the operation Herring, in which the paratrooper Enea Cucchi participated and fell heroically, on April 22, 1945. Enea was born there; he was awarded the silver medal for military valour; a street and a commemorative plaque are dedicated to him.
