It was mapped by the University of Minnesota Jones Mountains Party, 1960–61, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Lieutenant , U.S. Navy, co-pilot on a pioneer flight of November 25, 1961 from Byrd Station to establish Sky-High Camp (later Eights Station) at
