Helena "Elena" Gushi Kadare (born 1943 in Fier, Albania) is an Albanian author of short stories and novels, screenwriter, and translator.[2][3] One of these, 1970's Një lindje e vështirë, is the first novel by a woman to have been published in Albania.[4] Her 1990 novel A Woman from Tirana is perhaps her most widely read novel.
Biography[]
She was born in Fier, in central Albania.[4] She studied literature at the University of Tirana.[4] She then worked in journalism and as an editor in the publishing industry.[4][3]
She has written numerous short stories.[4] She also wrote the first full novel ever to have been published in Albanian by a woman: Një lindje e vështirë, Tirana 1970 (A Difficult Birth).[4] Her novel Një grua nga Tirana, Tirana 1994 (A Woman from Tirana) has been published in French, Dutch, English, and German translation, Une femme de Tirana in 1995, Een vrouw uit Tirana in 1996, and Eine Frau aus Tirana in 2009.[4][5]
Kadare has lived in Paris, France, with her husband writer Ismail Kadare since 1990.[6] Their daughter Besiana Kadare is the Albanian Ambassador to the United Nations, a Vice President of the United Nations General Assembly for its 75th session, and Albania's Ambassador to Cuba.[7]
