Hiiraan Online (HOL) is the oldest news and most popular website dedicated to news and information about Somalia and the Horn of Africa.[1][2][3] It is published in English and Somali as a primary source for Somali news and affairs. It has been described by many as being the most viewed Somali-owned website in the world.[4]
History[]
Hiiraan Online was founded in Ottawa, Canada, on July 1st, 1999,[1] making it the first Somali news website. Its founder, Ahmed Gure, a former airline Captain with Somali Airlines,[5] started the website to serve the growing Somali diaspora. The organisation was founded due to a lack of news coverage in Somalia following the failed mission code-named Operation Restore Hope and the subsequent withdrawal of UN troops in 1995.
Today it has grown to become a reliable hub of all Somali media both inside and outside the country for breaking news stories. The page also curates articles from news outlets around the world so readers can easily stay updated and well informed about Somalia and the wider region.

The website publishes news articles, opinions, and political commentary[2] and remains one of the most critical[6] and reliable news websites in the Somali media landscape.[7][8] Hiiraan Online is regularly cited frequently in academia,[2][9] books[10] and international media. The website hosts external links to the popular daily radio services for BBC Somali andVOA Somali. The website also hosts job advertisements for international bodies, government agencies and NGOs.[11]
