Lieutenant General TNI (Ret.) Hinsa Siburian (born Tarutung, 28 October 1959) is an Indonesian government official and former soldier. He currently served as Chief of National Cyber and Crypto Agency (Indonesian: Badan Siber dan Sandi Negara, BSSN) since 21 May 2019, replacing Major General TNI (Ret.) Dr. Djoko Setiadi.[1]

Early Life and Education[]

Siburian was born at Tarutung, 28 October 1959. He graduated from Indonesian Military Academy in 1986, and won both Adhi Makayasa and Tri Sakti Wiratama awards. Adhi Makayasa awarded as the best graduate of Indonesian Military Academies system (each branch have their own Adhi Makayasa winner), and Tri Sakti Wiratama awarded as the highest honor for graduate of Indonesian Military Academies system which excelled in mental, physical, and intellectual aspects.[2]

He also educated in Indonesian Army Command and General Staff College (graduated in 2000), Indonesian Armed Forces Staff and Command Colleges (graduated in 2006), and National Resilience Institute of The Republic of Indonesia (2011).[3]

Siburian was assigned to Kopassus after his graduation from the Indonesian Military Academy. He also assigned to various assignments during his time in military, mostly in Kopassus.[3][4][5]

During his time of assignment in Papua as Kasdam of Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih, he was instrumental in reconciling Dani tribe and Moni tribe, two indigenous tribe in Papua, which almost starting the Timika tribal war in 2014.[4]

Post Military Careers[]

In December 2018, he was appointed as commissary of Freeport Indonesia.[6]

On 21 May 2019, he appointed by Joko Widodo as Chief of BSSN.[6]

As in 2021, he still retained his post at Freeport Indonesia as the commissary of the Freeport Indonesia despite his assignment in BSSN.[7]

As Chief of BSSN[]

On 21 May 2019, he appointed by Joko Widodo as Chief of BSSN. His appointment as Chief of BSSN was unexpected, due to Joko Widodo informed him just night before the appointment at 20 May 2019. Despite that sudden appointment, he accepted the appointment.[8] He was appointed thru Presidential Decree No 56/P/2019. He appointed as the second chief of BSSN, but the first who enjoyed ministerial-level facilities and rights. Prior this, BSSN and its predecessor, Lemsaneg do not have such ministerial-level facilities and rights.[9] On the day of his inauguration as Chief of BSSN, he swore to fight against hoaxes and strengthening Indonesia cyber intelligence capabilities.[10]

Personal life[]

Siburian married with Lucyanna Endang boru Sianturi.[11] For his achievements and services, he honored by both Siburian and Sianturi Batak clans on 5 August 2017 in traditional ceremony.[11]
