The Hispaniolan emerald (Riccordia swainsonii) is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae.

Distribution and habitat[]

It is endemic to Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti) in the Caribbean. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical moist montane forest, and heavily degraded former forest.

Taxonomy[]

It is closely related to the Puerto Rican emerald (Riccordia maugaeus).

This species was formerly placed in the genus Chlorostilbon. A molecular phylogenetic study published in 2014 found that the genus Chlorostilbon was polyphyletic.[2] In the revised classification to create monophyletic genera, the Hispaniolan emerald was moved to the resurrected genus Riccordia.[3][4]
