Ila Patnaik is an Indian economist.[1][2] and former Principal Economic Advisor to the Government of India.[3] During this time, she prepared the Economic Survey of India, 2013-14[4][5][6][7] and contributed to numerous Government of India committees and task forces.[8] In 2014, she was the only female economist ranked within the top ten in India, along with the likes of Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen and former RBI governors Y V Reddy, Raghuram Rajan and Urjit Patel.[9] She also writes regular columns for the Indian Express.[10]

She is currently a professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP).[3]

Early life[]

Ila Patnaik was born in New Delhi. She did her B.A. in Economics (1983-1985), Hindu College, University of Delhi, Delhi; M.A. in Economics (1985-1987), Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; M.Phil. in Economics (1987-1989), Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Ph.D. in Economics (1991-1996), University of Surrey, Guildford, U.K.

Career[]

Ila Patnaik was an Economics Editor, Indian Express. She wrote a Fortnightly column in Business Standard. She also worked as Editor, Macro Track, A Quarterly Update on the Indian Economy, NCAER, New Delhi, 1997-2001. She did a program on NDTV, Policy with Patnaik from 2007 to 2009.And now she is working in the print on weekly shows regarding Indian Economy.
