Reverend Professor. Ioan Sauca (born April 10, 1956) is the acting general secretary of World Council of Churches (WCC).[1] He assumed the office in 1 April 2020 after Reverend Olav Fykse Tveit resigned in 31 March 2020. He is to hold the office until the next World Council of Churches (WCC) committee meeting in 2021, he was the Deputy secretary general in 2020.[2] Ioan Sauca, a senior Reverend from the Orthodox Church in Romania, he was a professor of Ecumenical Theology in the Bossey Institute. He has been professor since 1998 and was the director of the Institute in 2001.[3]
Sauca joined the World Councils of Church in 1994 as executive secretary for the Orthodox Studies and Relationship in Mission. Although, he works in Sibiu Romania teaching mission Ecumenical at the School of Theology prior to joining World Councils of Church. He later served as the head of Department of Press and Communication when it was newly established.[4]
A native of Valea Mare, Caraș-Severin County,[5] he received his Theology education in Sibiu and Bucharest, Romania. He attended the Graduate School at the Bossey Ecumenical Institute and went in to obtained his PhD of Theology from the University of Birmingham with the thesis on 'The Missionary Implications of Eastern Orthodox Ecclesiology'.[6][7]
