Jæren District Court (Norwegian: Jæren tingrett) is a district court located in the town of Sandnes in Rogaland county, Norway. The Court is located in Sandnes Courthouse in Olav V's plass in Sandnes. The court serves the west central part of the county which includes the municipalities of Gjesdal, Hå, Klepp, Sandnes, and Time. The court is subordinate to the Gulating Court of Appeal. The court is led by the chief judge (Sorenskriver) Anne Marie Aarrestad. This court employs a chief judge, ten other judges, and five prosecutors as well as other administrative assistants.^[1] Jæren District Court has seven courtrooms and eleven judges.

The court is a court of first instance. Its judicial duties are mainly to settle criminal cases and to resolve civil litigation as well as bankruptcy. The administration and registration tasks of the court include death registration, issuing certain certificates, performing duties of a notary public, and officiating civil wedding ceremonies. Cases from this court are heard by a combination of professional judges and lay judges. Cases from this district court may be appealed to the Gulating Court of Appeal.^[2]

History[]

Prior to 2006, the Jæren District Court was a court of the first instance for Hå, Sola, Klepp and Time municipalities, and it was located in the town of Bryne in Time municipality. On 1 July 2007, the old Ryfylke District Court was dissolved and Sandnes and Forsand municipalities were transferred into Jæren District Court and at the same time, Sola municipality was transferred out of Jæren to Stavanger District Court.
