Stavanger District Court (Norwegian: Stavanger tingrett) is a district court located in the city of Stavanger in Rogaland county, Norway. The court serves the central part of the county which includes the municipalities of Hjelmeland, Kvitsøy, Randaberg, Sola, Stavanger, and Strand. The court is subordinate to the Gulating Court of Appeal. The court is led by the chief judge (Sorenskriver) Tor Christian Carlsen. This court employs a chief judge, 18 other judges, and 24 prosecutors.[1]

The court is a court of first instance. Its judicial duties are mainly to settle criminal cases and to resolve civil litigation as well as bankruptcy. The administration and registration tasks of the court include death registration, issuing certain certificates, performing duties of a notary public, and officiating civil wedding ceremonies. Cases from this court are heard by a combination of professional judges and lay judges. Cases from this district court may be appealed to the Gulating Court of Appeal.[2]

History[]

Prior to 2007, Stavanger District Court only included the municipality of Stavanger. On 1 July 2007, the old Ryfylke District Court was dissolved and most of it was transferred to the Stavanger District Court, except for Sandnes municipality which was transferred to Jæren District Court. Also on that date, Sola Municipality was transferred out of Jæren District Court into Stavanger District Court. In 2008, Sauda and Suldal municipalities weretransferred to Haugaland District Court and Forsand municipality was transferred to Jæren District Court.
