The Jalalabad prison attack occurred on 2–3 of August 2020, when a suicide car bomber and gunmen of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISIL) attacked a prison in Jalalabad, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.[1][2] The attack began on the evening of 2 August.[1] A 20 hour long battle ensued between the soldiers and ISIL.[1] At least 29 people were killed including civilians, prisoners, guards, Afghan security forces, and at least eight ISIL attackers.[1][2] 50 other people were injured as well.[1] The prison held 1,793 inmates, most of whom were members of the jihadist groups ISIL and Taliban.[1] Most of the prisoners escaped, of whom 1,025 have been brought back to the prison.[1] On August 3, ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack.[1][2]
