Jason Binn is an American publisher and entrepreneur known for founding Niche Media and DuJour Media.[1][3][4][5]

Biography[]

Binn was born in 1968 to Moreton and Penny Binn[2][6] in Roslyn, New York.[7] He graduated cum laude and early from Boston University's College of Communications in 1986.[8][9][10][11][12] He serves on the university's advisory board.[13]

Binn married Haley Lieberman in December 2003.[6] They have three children[14] and resided together in New York City.[4][15][16] before separating in 2016.[17]

Publishing career[]

At 23, he began his publishing career at D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles.[1][18][19][20] After graduating from Boston University with only $5,000 to his name, he built media brands across the country. Upon moving to South Florida, he founded Ocean Drive magazine in 1992, a large format luxury publication focusing on the Miami lifestyle.[18][19][21][11]

In 1998, he founded Niche Media, a publisher of regional luxury magazines including Hamptons Magazine (The Hamptons, Long Island, New York),[22][23][24] Aspen Peak (Aspen, Colorado), Boston Common (Boston, Mass), Capitol File (Washington, D.C.).,[25] Gotham (New York),[26][27] Los Angeles Confidential, Vegas Magazine (Las Vegas) and Michigan Avenue (Chicago).[19]

Under Binn, Niche Media created custom publications for Art Basel Miami Beach, the Wynn Las Vegas and the Short Hills Mall for the Taubman real estate organization. Niche Media was acquired by Greenspun Media Group in 2007, for what is believed to be in excess of $100M.[28][29][30]

During the peak of Binn's career, he was producing 16 individual titles, which consisted of printing over a 100 publications a month. In 2010, Binn was appointed Chairman of Niche Media Holdings LLC.[31] Under Binn, Niche Media launched in 10 major markets, publishing over 80 issues annually across the country.[29] In 2011, he partnered with Getty Images and WireImage to promote his personal photography, archives and BinnShot.[32]

In 2010, Binn was the Chief Advisor to Gilt Groupe, an online luxury shopping company[33][34] In January 2016, Gilt was sold to Hudson's Bay Company for $250 million.[35][36]

In 2012, Binn founded DuJour Media,[37][38][39] his first major media launch since he sold Niche Media in 2006.[40][41] DuJour's publications include Town and Country, Gotham Los Angeles, Aspen Peak, the Robb Report and DuJour Magazine, the quarterly released chief publication, that caters to those who have a minimum net worth of $5 million.[42][43]

Since 2016, he has been executive director of JetSmarter, Inc.[44]

Awards and recognition[]

In 2005, Binn was profiled in Forbes magazine's "Forbes 400",[45] and was awarded Ernst & Young's "Entrepreneur of the Year."[46] In 2007, he was the only media member inducted into the American Advertising Federation's “Advertising Hall of Achievement”.[47] In 2008, he was listed in Crain's “40 Under 40” list of successful entrepreneurs.[48]

In fall 2012, Crain's New York credited Binn with making print magazines more successful in a time when print is losing market to digital media.[49] He was also recognized by American Advertising Federation.[47] In 2008 he was a recipient of Boston University's Distinguished Alumni Award for Service to Profession for his work in the field of communications and media.[50][51]
