Biography[]

Having been involved with music all his life, John Carter Cash spends much of his time working as a record producer. He is also a singer-songwriter, and author. The grandson of Maybelle Carter (1909–1978) and the only son of Johnny Cash (1932–2003) and June Carter Cash (1929–2003), he preserves the family legacy and is caretaker to the heritage of his musical ancestors.

He was referenced numerous times in his parents' recordings. For several years after his birth, his father altered the conclusion of "A Boy Named Sue" to mention him by name; in 1972 his parents recorded the duet "I Got a Boy (And His Name is John)" about their son; and in 1975 a photograph of John Carter Cash frolicking with his father adorned the sleeve of the album Look at Them Beans. John Carter Cash also dabbled in recording music, duetting with his father on two tracks recorded for the 1988 Johnny Cash album Water from the Wells of Home.

He began his work as a music producer with his mother June Carter Cash on her album, Press On, which won a Grammy in 1999,[1] then went on to work under Rick Rubin as associate producer on his father Johnny Cash's Grammy winning records American III: Solitary Man and American IV: The Man Comes Around, the latter receiving three Country Music Association awards.

He also produced his mother's record Wildwood Flower, which won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk album in 2003. His 2004 production Unbroken Circle: The Musical Heritage of the Carter Family received three Grammy nominations (Johnny Cash made his final studio recording, a version of "Engine 143", for this album, only two weeks before his death). John is co-Producer on Marty Stuart's album, Badlands: Ballads of the Lakota. The album The Voice of the Spirit, the Gospel of the South released in April 2006, received critical regard and acclaim. His production on Billy Joe Shaver's Everybody's Brother, helped earn a Grammy nomination in 2007.

John has produced material for Loretta Lynn, Chris Cornell, Brooks & Dunn, Elvis Costello, Jamey Johnson, Dr. Ralph Stanley, George Jones, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Mavis Staples, Lynda Carter, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Sheryl Crow, John Randal and Jessi Alexander, Norman and Nancy Blake, Jack Clift, Tim O'Brien, Josh Turner, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kris Kristofferson, Wylie and the Wild West, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Earl and Randy Scruggs, Rosanne Cash, John Cowan, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Tony Rice, and John Prine. In total, he has been a producer on five Grammy Award-winning records.

John's first album of his own music, titled Bitter Harvest, was released only to the international market in 2003. His latest record, titled The Family Secret, received a three starred review in Rolling Stone. His newest release is titled We Must Believe in Magic.

He is the author of three children's books – Momma Loves Her Little Son, Daddy Loves His Little Girl, and his latest release, The Cat in the Rhinestone Suit. He authored a biography on his mother, Anchored in Love (which was turned into a Lifetime movie titled Ring of Fire) and one on his personal relationship with his father, House of Cash: The Legacies of My Father Johnny Cash. His first novel, a fantasy titled Lupus Rex, was released in June 2013.

He is the husband of entertainer and songwriter Ana Cristina Cash, whom he married in 2016 in Charleston, South Carolina. In 2017, their daughter Grace June Cash was born.[2] In July 2021, John Carter and Ana Cristina’s second child together, James Kristoffer Cash was born. Together, they own and operate Cash Cabin Enterprises, LLC., where he does most of his music production work in the Cash Cabin Studio, the same studio where his father recorded several of his songs years ago.[citation needed] In addition to Grace June and James Kristoffer, he also has three children from two prior marriages: Joseph John Cash, Anna Maybelle Cash, and Jack Ezra Cash.[3]
