Joyashree Roy

Joyashree Roy (born 1 October 1957)[1] is an Indian economist, energy and climate scientist.[2] She is the inaugural Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and was appointed to the Bangabandhu Chair on Sustainable Energy in 2018.[3] She also lectures at the Institute's Department of Energy, Environment, and Climate.

Early life and education[]

Roy earned a doctorate degree from Jadavpur University.[3] She was an Indian Council of Social Sciences Research fellow and a Ford Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.[3] At Jadavpur University, she worked in the Department of Economics.[3]

The Bangabandhu Chair on Sustainable Energy was officially inaugurated on March 15, 2018 following the signing of a letter of intent between the Asian Institute of Technology and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh.[4]

Career[]

Roy takes a holistic approach to sustainable energy research, linking it to policy making as she stresses the global and multi-sector nature of the climate crisis.

Roy is one of the authors of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (2007),[5] a panel which won the Nobel Peace Prize.[4] She is also one of the authors of the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C (2018).[6]
