Kaito (Japanese: 海人; born August 21, 1997) is a Japanese shoot boxer. He is the former Shootboxing Super Lightweight champion and the 2018 SHOOT BOXING S-Cup World Tournament winner.[2]
Kickboxing career[]
Next Generation Cup[]
Ono made his professional debut in February 2014 against Jun Kitagawa. He won the fight at the tail end of the third round, winning by KO.[3] He won his next two fights against Takahito Suzuki and Tetsuyuki Uemura by TKO, both times forcing his opponents corner to throw in the towel.[4][5]
His perfect 3–0 record earned him a place in the J-NETWORK Next Generation 62 kg tournament. In the quarterfinals, he defeated RS YUTAKA by a low kick KO. In the semifinals, he met Hideki and won by unanimous decision. He met MASATO in the finals, and won by a majority decision after two rounds.[6]
Shootboxing titles[]
After winning the Next Generation Cup, Ono amassed a 14-3-1 record, fighting almost exclusively in Shootboxing. His most notable wins during this run came against the 2014 S-Cup winner Hiroaki Suzuki,[7] the future K-1 Super Lightweight champion Rukiya Anpo,[8] and the noted mixed martial artist Teruto Ishihara.[9]
His stellar run with Shootboxing gave him a chance to fight Kenta for the Super Lightweight title.[10] Ono won the title through a majority decision win.[11]
After winning the title, Ono won his next three fights in Shootboxing, defeating Tapruwan Hadesworkout, Jaowear Sirilakgym and Fukashi Mizutani by (T)KO.[12][13][14]
Kaito Ono then made his Rizin debut during Rizin 11, when he fought Yoshiya Uzatsuyo. He won the fight by KO, after landing a knee to the head of Uzatsuyo.[15] Ono won his Rizin 12 fight against Sho Ogawa as well, by unanimous decision.[16]
His nine fight winning streak was snapped by an extra round decision loss to Chamuaktong Fightermuaythai.[17]
After this loss, Ono participated in the 2018 SHOOT BOXING S-cup 65 kg World Tournament. He won the tournament with TKO wins over Cho Gyeon Jae, Kenta Takada and UMA.[18]
2019 Shootboxing and RISE debut[]
Ono afterwards fought Yosuke Mizuochi during the 2018 KING OF KNOCK OUT event. He defeated Mizuochi by TKO in the third round, after the ringside doctor stopped the bout.[19]
In 2019, Ono achieved a 5–1 record in Shootboxing, with notable wins coming over the two weight Lumpinee Boxing Stadium champion Pongsiri P.K.Saenchaimuaythaigym[20] and the two weight RISE champion Lee Sung-hyun.[21] He lost his sole 2020 Shootboxing match with Pinphet Banchamek by a split decision, after a third extra round was fought.[22]
His third appearance with Rizin came during Rizin 23, when he was scheduled to fight Daryl Lokoku.[23] Ono won by unanimous decision.
He made his RISE debut in October 2020, against Tsukuru Midorikawa.[24] He defeated Midorikawa by majority decision.[25] Ono was scheduled to fight Makoto Kitamura on November 28, 2020.[26] He won the fight by a third-round head kick knockout.
REBELS title reign[]
Ono was scheduled to fight Hinata for the REBELS Black Super Welterweight title at REBELS ~The FINAL~. Ono beat Hinata by majority decision.[27]
Ono was scheduled to fight the former K-1 title challenger Mohan Dragon at Shoot Boxing 2021 act.2, in a non-title bout. He won by unanimous decision.[28]
Ono was scheduled to face Masashi Nakajima at RISE WORLD SERIES 2021 Osaka on November 14, 2021. He won the fight by unanimous decision, with all three judges awarding him a 30-26 scorecard.[29]
