Kamil Tolon (29 February 1912 - 23 July 1978) was a Turkish businessperson, industrialist, and inventor.[1][2][3] He is the founder of the Tolon Factory, which produced weaving looms,[4] washing machines[5] and electric motors in Bursa in the 1950s.[6] Tolon, who also served as the chairman of the BCCI between 1963-1965, took part in the establishment of the .[7]

His life[]

He was born in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Ottoman Empire on 29 February 1912. His family was known as "Saatçioğulları".[8] He was his father Mr. Muhittin's and Mrs. Behiye's second child.[9] He married Müeyyet Bulut in 1937. Then their children, Abatun and Barkın were born.[10] In 1943, he got a divorce from Müeyyet Bulut and married Muzaffer Biliktü. One year later his son Dara was born and six years later his daughter Cana was born.[11]

Education[]

He finished elementary school in many provinces by the reason of his father's business.[9] He graduated from Ankara High School for Boys in 1931.[9] He had wanted to study engineering, but during those times in Turkey there was not an engineering school. He invented a music box.[9] His Master's Voice had wanted to buy this invention. By the reason of its high price, the company had not bought it.[9] After that, he had sold it to Efes family. In 1931 he started to study in Ankara Faculty of Law. Turkish prime minister Adnan Menderes was his classmate.[9]

Career[]

When he graduated from university in 1935, he was appointed as PTT inspector. He resigned because of his experiences during his first inspection trip to Anatolia in 1937.[9] After that, with Mayor of Bursa, Fahri Batıca, they had opened a shop. In this shop they produced Turkey's first washing machine.[12][13][14][15] After that, his classmate Adnan Menderes suggested that Kamil Tolon produce electric motors. After that, he had produced Turkey's first electric motor.[16][17][18][19] During that time, he had developed the copper wire machine.[20][21] After that, he became a founder of Justice Party.[22][23]Between 1963 and 1965, he was the chairman of the BCCI board of directors. He played a role in the establishment of the Invention Men's Association and Turkey's first organized industrial zone.[24] Also, he was the Bursa Provincial Chairman of the Justice Party. He was elected as a member of the board of directors of Bursa Cement in 1966.[25] Due to his death in 1978, production activities continued in İzmir after 1983.[26]

Death[]

He died on July 23, 1978 in Switzerland from an embolism at the age of 66. His grave is in Emir Sultan Cemetery next to Bursa Emir Sultan Mosque.[27]
