Karthika Deepam is an Indian Telugu television series that airs on Star Maa starring Premi Viswanath and Paritala Nirupam.[1][2] It is a remake of the Malayalam television series Karuthamuthu which aired on Asianet.[3][4] It premiered on 16 October 2017.[5]

Plot[]

Fair-skinned Karthik, a doctor, and dark-skinned Deepa frequently encounter each other. Karthik is impressed by her kindness and selfless generosity. Karthik's brother, Aditya, falls in love with Deepa's fair-skinned stepsister Sravya, but Sravya loves Karthik. Aditya's mother, Soundarya, accepts Aditya's match as Sravya is light-skinned, and Sravya's parents agree. Sravya is initially overjoyed as she assumes she will marry Karthik, but on learning the truth, she threatens suicide unless Karthik marries her. However, Karthik asks permission to marry Deepa. Having previously failed to arrange a marriage for Deepa, Sravya's father, with whom Deepa lives, withholds the information to gain her acceptance. However, Karthik and Deepa marry at a temple and announce this at a birthday party which makes Soundarya and Sravya furious. Soundarya reluctantly allows Deepa into the household while Sravya marries Aditya but wants to get rid of Aditya and Deepa. Her plans fail and, threatened with expulsion, she starts to become a better wife and daughter-in-law.

Karthik's childhood friend Monitha returns and schemes to have him to herself. She causes Sravya to have a miscarriage so that Deepa will be blamed. She tries to separate Karthik and Deepa creating misunderstandings while convinces Karthik that Deepa is having an affair with novelist Vihari while Deepa considers Vihari like her brother. Monitha's becomes furious when Soundarya who hates Deepa, chooses another woman to be Karthik's second wife. Deepa's father learns of this and stops the engagement; as he argues with Soundarya, Deepa is revealed to be pregnant. Deepa is happy and swears that she was not responsible for Sravya's miscarriage. She gets accepted by Soundarya.

Karthik has a medical test to see if he can father children but Monitha changes the reports. It is revealed that Monitha has been responsible for Karthik's misconception and that she was also responsible for the death of his college girlfriend Hima. Meanwhile, Monitha makes several failed attempts to have Deepa killed and hires Durga, a vigilante killer. However, after witnessing Deepa's kindness, Durga decides to protect her. Monitha tries to have them both killed in a car accident but fails. Durga confesses his identity to Deepa but, because as he falls in love with Monitha, he puts the balme on Karthik. Deepa prepares to leave the house expressing Durga's statements to the family. Karthik denies on being confronted and explains that he isn't the father of the unborn child of Deepa, showing the reports and accuses Vihari for Deepa's pregnancy. Shocked and shattered Deepa leaves due to everyone's distrust and confronts her father over doubting her and concealing information. Meanwhile, Karthik's father and brother ask him to be retested, but Monitha convinces him not to do so.

Deepa gets a job at a petrol bunk. Soundarya confronts Vihari, who she suspects of being the child's father, but gets convinced that he is not and asks Deepa to return or accept money. While Deepa refuses to return, Karthik again refuses to retake the tests. Deepa gives birth to twins. Deepa being unaware of it, Soundarya takes one home in hopes that the babies will allow the parents to reconcile in the future and says it as an orphan to the family. Karthik slowly begins to love the child, names her Hima after his late girlfriend while Deepa leaves the city with the other child, Sourya.

Eight years later[]

Deepa lives with Sourya in a village running a tailor shop. Owing health issues Deepa along with her daughter Sourya moves to the city for treatment and starts working as a cook and crosses path with Karthik and his family. She finds that Hima is adopted by her husband. The whole family asks Deepa to return to Karthik's life with her daughter but she denies as Karthik didn't trust her. Sourya and Hima become good friends unaware being twin sisters while Hima is attached to Deepa like her mother. Monitha plans to destroy Deepa and wants to be in Karthik's life.

Meanwhile, Hima learns Karthik is her father but is silent due to their parents' issues. Deepa knows that Hima is her twin daughter. Monita causes more trouble for Deepa but it always backfires. Karthik knows that Hima is also Deepa's daughter. Later Deepa and her daughters move out of the house. Deepa finds Monitha's misdeeds and that she was behind the death of Karthik's girlfriend Hima and tries to prove it to Karthik and expose Monitha's misdeeds. However, she fails to do so and karthik humiliates her. she leaves the city and goes far away. soundarya and murali krishna searches for her while karthik promises to marry monitha if she finds hima. Deepa starts running a tiffin centre which becomes a huge success due to Sourya's idea. Upon family's request, Karthik decides to retake the test which tenses Monitha. Elsewehere, Deepa starts falling ill.

Karthik finds Deepa's location and emotionally reconciles with Sourya and Hima. He takes Sourya, Hima and Deepa to their rich residence in city. Soundarya, Anand Rao, Aditya and Sravya feels elated but Karthik confirms that he just bought Deepa for the sake of children. Karthik learns that Deepa has 50% chances of living due to her illness. He accepts her as wife to get her treated. The family is delighted by Karthik's change but Deepa is still suspicious about his behaviour. Planning to reunite Karthik and Deepa, Deepa's now-changed Step-mother Bhagyam invites Karthik and family for Lord Ram and Sita's kalyanam in their house. Karthik invites Monitha who poisons Deepa's medicines. Unaware, Deepa takes the medicines. Deepa falls unconscious but recovers. Soundarya learns about Deepa's illness and is shattered. Due to Deepa's health, Karthik warns her not to cook but she and children misunderstands Karthik's intentions and demands answers but Karthik stays calm. After the doctor’s and Karthik’s mother suggestion, he revealed the truth to Deepa about her health. She is shattered knowing the truth and feared about her children’s future if she demises.

Deepa shares her miseries with Soundarya, who consoles her. Meanwhile, Karthik learns that Deepa is not having an affair with Vihari and feels repented for accusing Deepa all these days. He decides to confess his mistakes to Deepa in the Puja, organized for Deepa's well-being. He does so and the family feels elated by their reconciliation but Monitha arrives and alleges Karthik of impregnating her leaving him and his family baffled. Deepa moves to back to a rented house without Sourya and Hima, this time. However, Karthik begins to stay with Deepa, Sourya and Hima in the same rented house and tries to get back with Deepa. Initially furious, Deepa begins to experience Karthik's innocence and suspects Monitha's foul play. Monitha compels Karthik to accepting into marrying her on 25th, the same month. Later, Karthik learns about Monitha's obsession towards him and tries to find whether he is the father of her child or she is playing a drama to marry him. He enquires Monitha's maid Priyamani but in vain.

Further to compel Karthik, Monitha approaches ACP Roshini and accuses Karthik of deceiving her after impregnating her. Roshini begins investigation while Deepa traces Anji, a former contact killer, who killed Hima, Karthik's girlfriend. Monitha too reaches Anji and abducts him after confessing all her crimes. Unbeknownst to Monitha, Deepa records her confessions and shows it to Karthik.

Furious, Karthik confronts Monitha with a gun. Monitha reveals that she got impregnated by him using IVF after stealing his sample from hospital, where he submitted his sample to test himself for conformation. Bhagyam (Deepa'stepmother), who is tied up by Monitha for trying stop her marriage with Karthik hears a gun shot from hall, where Karthik and Monitha were quarrelling. In a broken state, Karthik returns home and reveals to Deepa about the reason behind Monitha's pregnancy.

When Deepa and Karthik set out to meet Roshini and expose Monitha, Roshini arrives there and arrests Karthik under charges of murdering Monitha by shooting her to death and later hiding her body.

Production[]

In late March 2020, the production and broadcasting of the series halted along with all other Indian television series and films owing Covid-19 outbreak in India.[6][7] It resumed after three months on June 2020.[8]

Viewership and ratings[]

Beginning with an average viewership, after few months, the series soon became one of the top rated Indian television program and top Telugu program garnering a record viewership, maintaining the first position consistently in the BARC's weekly viewership list despite completing 1000 episodes.[14][15][16][17] The highest rating garnered by the series was 20.7 TVR.[18] In the first week of June 2021, it broke its highest ratings record with 21.1 TVR.[19][20]

As in January 2019, it was garnering an average rating of about more than 12 TVR.[21] As in October 2020, it continued to remain top rated garnering ratings of more than 18 TVR.[22] In week 34, it continued to maintain its top position with 18.35 TVR.[23] In week 42, it garnered 18.56 TVR.[24] In week 44, it garnered 15.11 million impressions with 18.68 TVR.[25] In week 45, it maintained its top position with 14.97 million impressions and 18.43 TVR.[26]

In week 6 of 2021, it continued to maintain the top position with 14.54 million impressions and 18.03 TVR.[27] In week 8, it maintained its top position with 13.54 million impressions and 16.87 TVR.[28] As in July 2021, it maintained its top position with 17.68 TVR.[29] In week 33, it garnered 18.83 TVR.[30]

Reception[]

The Hindu criticized the series as, "The serial follows a faithful template set by Ekta Kapoor, that trendsetter who gave (mostly) housewives soapy and weepy sagas which belied both sense and sensibility at every tantalizing turn."[62]

Asianet News criticized, "The serial, which takes place between trust and distrust, continues to take a turn for the worse."[63]
