Katy Mills is a shopping mall in Katy, Texas within the Houston metropolitan area, and it is one of the tourist destinations in Houston, Texas. It was developed by The Mills Corporation and is now managed by Simon Property Group, who owns 62.5% of it. The mall opened on October 28, 1999[2] and hosted a variety of over 200 specialty stores. Katy Mills has about 1.3 million square feet (0.12 km2) of retail space.

Shopping center[]

Katy Mills is a one-story facility that sits on 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2) of land, located next to Typhoon Texas water park was opened in the Memorial Day weekend of May 2016 and just off of Interstate 10 on exit 741. The mall is built with a "racetrack" design and one complete pass around the mall on Katy Mills Cir. The road is approximately 1 mile (1.6 km).

Popular department stores and anchors including AMC Theatres, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, Books-A-Million, Burlington Coat Factory, H&M, XXI Forever, Marshalls, Off Broadway Shoes, Off Fifth Saks Fifth Avenue, Old Navy, Rainforest Cafe, Restoration Hardware Outlet, Ross Dress for Less, Sun and Ski Sports, and Tilt Studio, some of which relocated from Sealy Outlet Center, which was supplanted by Katy Mills due to its distance from nearby Sealy. It has a food court, a carousel, a rock climbing wall, and a Disney Junior themed play area. Outside, various restaurants such as Red Lobster, Fuddruckers, T.G.I. Friday's, and Los Cucos surround the mall. There is also an AMC Theatres with 20 theater rooms.

History and store closures[]

Originally, the mall featured Midnight Rodeo, which opened in 2003 and closed in 2006 and became a Circuit City prototype called "The City", which opened and closed in 2008 and it is now Ross Dress for Less in 2014.[3]

The mall also once featured the Jillian's restaurant and entertainment center. It closed in 2004[4] and became Steve & Barry's, which, in 2008 was closed and became Jumpstreet and Segway Outback,[5] which itself closed in 2019.[6] The mall also once featured Harold-Powell, which, in 2004 was closed and became Last Call by Neiman Marcus,[7] which was closed in August 2020.[8] In 2009, A Forever 21 outlet known as XXI Forever, opened between Neighborhoods 3 and 6. In 2010, Johnny Rockets closed and became DC Shoes, which closed in 2015 and is now Jared Vault. In 2012, Tilt Studio opened in the same place F.Y.E. used to be. In 2014, Old Navy was relocated next to Burlington in Neighborhood 5 and its old location is now H&M. On Summer 2016, Bed Bath and Beyond closed and became DR34M Home Rug and Design, which opened in early 2017 and it is now Restoration Hardware Outlet as of October 2017.

In 2018, Katy Mills started to renovate with a tile floor smash.[9] The interior renovation was completed in 2019.[10] Phase 2 begun on October 28, 2019.[11]

Katy Mills closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it reopened in June that year and added special signage to guide shoppers on how to stay safe.[12][13][14]

The shopping mall is located within Fort Bend County, Texas, although a future anchor space and a small portion of the parking lot is located in neighboring Harris County.[15]
