Christopher "Kit" Hood[2] (24 March 1943 – 20 January 2020) was a Canadian television editor, director, writer and producer. He is best known as the co-creator of the Degrassi teen drama franchise alongside Linda Schuyler, including the series The Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High, and Degrassi High, the latter two of which established the franchise's popularity and longevity. He served as the director of many of the shows' episodes, and his directing style was marked by Schuyler as an influence on the Degrassi franchise.

Career[]

Christopher "Kit" Hood was born in England in 1943. Hood was a film editor with Walt Disney Productions in London, before emigrating to Canada in 1969.[3] In the early 1970s, he was active editing television commercials.[3]

Kit Hood and Linda Schuyler founded Playing With Time, a company which specialized in educational films and documentaries in 1976.[4] They went on to create Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High, and the film School's Out.

Hood died at his home in West Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia on 20 January 2020 aged 76.[5][6] In August 2021, Hood's daughter Georgia stated that his death occurred "quite suddenly".[7]

Legacy[]

In August 2021, Hood's daughter Georgia created a petition on Change.org to rename the laneway behind the former Playing With Time production office after him.[7]
