The Kids of Degrassi Street is a Canadian children's television series and the first series in the Degrassi franchise. It follows the lives of a group of children living on Degrassi Street in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The series began as an annual series of after-school specials that aired on CBC Television annually from 1980 to 1982, and turned into a series when CBC ordered five new episodes that year.

The series notably featured several actors who would later appear in Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High with different roles.

Development[]

Linda Schuyler, a seventh- and eighth-grade teacher at Earl Grey Senior Public School in Toronto, formed the company Playing With Time with Kit Hood in the late 1970s. Schuyler championed the art of filmmaking in her class and encouraged her students to use film to tell stories. Bruce Mackey, the librarian of Earl Grey Senior Public School, responded to Schuyler's interests by ordering multiple books on filmmaking, one of which was the picture book Ida Makes a Movie, which was written by Kay Chorao.

Mackey was unaware that the book was geared towards children, and involved cats. Nonetheless, Schuyler became interested in making a film adaptation of the book, and she sought the advice of then-lawyer and future Epitome Pictures co-founder Stephen Stohn. Schuyler flew to New York, where she met with Chorao and secured a deal to adapt the movie.[2]

Yan Moore, at the time an editor for The Kids Of Degrassi Street, became a writer for the series after he rectified problems with the story of the episode Casey Draws The Line.[2]

Wendy Watson and Lewis Manne, who later composed the music for Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, composed the music for The Kids Of Degrassi Street, with John Forbes initially performing the music on a Fairlight CMI.[3]

The Kids of Degrassi Street featured many of the same actors who would later appear on Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, including Stacie Mistysyn, Neil Hope, Anais Granofsky, Sarah Charlesworth, John Ioannou, in different unrelated roles.[4]

Robin "Griff" Griffith is having trouble with schoolwork. He would rather be drawing pictures than studying, and when his friend Danny, the crossing guard, asks for a caricature of himself, Griff is determined to make it his best ever. But Danny suddenly dies of a stroke, and Griff just cannot stand that he did not finish the caricature in time.

The show has also aired on BBC in the United Kingdom, on ABC TV, ABC Kids and Nickelodeon in Australia, on TVB in Hong Kong, on RTÉ One and RTÉ Two in Ireland, on M-Net in South Africa, on ZNBC in Zambia, KTV2 in Kuwait, on NBC in Namibia, on RTM 1 in Malaysia, on ZTV in Zimbabwe, on GBC TV in Gibraltar, on StarPlus in India and also started airing on Showtime on March 3, 1982 as well as subsequently on the Disney Channel in the United States.

Home media[]

On July 31, 2007, WGBH Boston Home Video released The Kids of Degrassi Street: The Complete Series on DVD in Region 1.

In Region 4, Beyond Home Entertainment released the entire series on DVD in Australia on March 12, 2008.
