Klementyna Suchanow ([suxa'nɔf], née Czernicka;[1] born 26 February 1974)[2][3] is a Polish writer, editor, and activist. She is the co-founder of the movement All-Poland Women's Strike.[4]

Biography[]

Born in Kamienna Góra, Poland, Suchanow lived in Chełmsko Śląskie, and Wałbrzych, and attended school in Wodzisław Śląski.[3] She studied Polish and Spanish studies at the University of Wrocław.[5] In 2003, she obtained a doctorate in literary studies.[1] She worked as an editor in the Publishing house Znak.[6]

She has conducted research on the life and work of the Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz, as well as the history and literature of Latin America.[7][8]

Activism[]

Suchanow has been participating in street protests. Since 2016 she has been a member of the All-Poland Women's Strike,[4] organizer, and participant of protests against the restriction of human rights and women's rights in Poland,[9][10] on the judicial independence,[11][12] and freedom of assembly.[13][14]

In 2017, the investigative journalism website OKO.press has placed her on the list of "17 Women Who Rocked PiS".[15] After she threw eggs at the limos leaving the Presidential Palace, the Internal Security Agency entered her house. In July 2018, on the wall of the Sejm, she wrote with a spray: “Time for a final judgment. Get the fuck out," (Polish: Czas na sąd ostateczny. Wypierdalać) after which the police handcuffed her.[16] In May 2018, Suchanow was among activists who stopped the march of neo-fascists in Warsaw.[17] In November 2018, together with other women, she was attacked by militants during the Independence March.[18]

Personal life[]

Suchanow has a daughter, and lives in Warsaw.[3][19]

Awards and recognitions[]

In 2018, Suchanow's biography Gombrowicz. I, the Genius was among the nominees for the Nike Award.[24] The book was awarded by the art-and-culture magazine Odra,[25] and by the portal Onet, with the literary "O!lśnienie Onetu".[26]
