Lauren Tsai (born February 11, 1998), also known as Lala (ララ), is an American illustrator, model, and actress.[2] She is best known to audiences for her appearance in the Fuji TV and Netflix series Terrace House: Aloha State. She made her acting debut in the third and final season of Legion, a television series based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name.

Life[]

Lauren Tsai was born on February 11, 1998, in Wellesley, Massachusetts, United States,[1] to American management consultants Linda Marie (née Milkowski) and Stephen Ming-Hsi Tsai.[5][6]

She has two older sisters, Christine and Michelle.[5] She is a niece of American restaurateur Ming Tsai,[7] a granddaughter of American engineer Stephen W. Tsai and a great-granddaughter of Chinese composer Li Baochen.[5]

Her family moved to Honolulu, Hawaii when she was seven years old. She visited Japan for the first time at the age of eleven. She studied at Punahou School,[8] then attended Concord Academy in Massachusetts in the ninth grade.[9][10] After a year in Massachusetts, she moved back to Hawaii and attended Pacific Buddhist Academy,[11][12] when she started to take Japanese classes. She then studied in Hiroshima, Japan for six weeks during an exchange program.[2][10]

Career[]

In 2014, she began modeling in Japan under the name "Lala".[citation needed] In November 2016, she auditioned for Terrace House.

After moving out of the show's Honolulu house, she continued to pursue her modeling and artistic work. As a model, she's since appeared in a number of magazines, commercials, catalogs and fashion shows, including in Japan and Hawaii.

In 2018, she drew a variant cover for issue No. 1 of West Coast Avengers.[13] In 2019, she followed with a variant cover for Captain Marvel No. 1.[14] She also collaborated with Marc Jacobs on a line of apparel and accessories.[15]

In January 2019, she was cast in the third and final season of the FX series Legion as Switch, a young mutant who has time travelling abilities.[16] She then starred in the 2021 Netflix film Moxie, directed by Amy Poehler.[17]

Artistry[]

Tsai describes her sketchbook as "probably my most cherished item."[18]

Early artistic influences include Studio Ghibli, Tim Burton, and Laika Studios. Her friendship and collaborations with artist James Jean has introduced her to artists such as Katsuya Terada and the collective FriendsWithYou.[18]
