Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai is a Malaysian businessman. He is the Executive Chairman and Founder of Top Glove Corporation Bhd, a glove manufacturing company, which was founded in 1991 and is listed on Bursa Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange) and the main board of the Singapore Exchange (SGX). Lim was listed by Forbes as Malaysia's 8th richest person in 2021.[2]

Early life and education[]

Lim was born and raised in the Chinese New Village of Titi, Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan. He grew up in the family shophouse, which was one of the largest shophouses in Titi. He attended SJK(C) Chun Yin for his primary education, which his grandfather was one of the founders, and continued secondary education at the SM Undang Jelebu. Lim’s family ran a rubber trading business, and he would help out in the estate during weekends.[3] Lim graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours in Physics in 1982, from University Malaya. After graduation, he worked as an air conditioner sales executive in OYL Industries, a Malaysian air conditioner manufacturer later acquired by Japan’s Daikin for two years under a demanding boss who taught him the virtues of resilience and hard work.[4]Next, he decided to further his studies overseas with his wife and obtained his Master of Business Administration in 1985 from Sul Ross State University in Texas, United States. After getting his MBA, Lim returned to Malaysia and continued working under his former employer as a sales manager.[5]

In 2015, he obtained his PhD in Management from the University of Selangor in Malaysia, and was conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration by Oklahoma City University in the United States in 2016. In August 2018, Lim was also conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Entrepreneurship by Management & Science University, Shah Alam, Malaysia.[7][8] In October 2020, Lim was conferred an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Business Management by University of Cyberjaya and appointed as an Honorary Professor of the university.

Business and career[]

In 1991, Lim founded Top Glove as a local business enterprise with 1 factory and 1 glove production line. Top Glove has since emerged the world’s largest manufacturer of gloves, capturing 26% of the world market share for gloves.[9] The Company presently has 50 manufacturing facilities in Malaysia, Thailand, China and Vietnam with a total of 800 production lines and total production capacity of 100 billion pieces per annum.[10]

Lim started Top Glove with a single production line only in 1991.

Involvement in associations[]

Tan Sri Dr Lim has been actively involved in many associations and organisations in Malaysia. Lim’s current involvement in associations and organisations includes Chairman in 2019 and Non-Independent Non-Executive Director since 2017 of Tropicana Corporation Berhad,[11] President Emeritus in 2019/2020 and Council Member since 2010 of the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers[12] and Life Honorary Advisor of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia since 2011.[13]

He was the President of the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) in 2016/17. Lim served as the Director and Board Member of the Employees Provident Fund (Malaysia) from 2015 to 2020. He also served as a Director and Board Member of University of Malaya from 2015 to 2018,[14] Council Member of the East Asia Business Council (EABC) from 2011 to 2015, and Director of the Association of Malaysian Medical Industries (AMMI) from 1996 to 2002. In addition, he was a Board Member of the Malaysian Rubber Board from 1998 to 1999 and also the President of the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) from 1997 to 1999. Prior to that, he served as Vice-President, Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of MARGMA for seven (7) years.

  • In 2004, Lim was awarded prestigious accolade Master and Country Entrepreneur of Malaysia for the Year, by Ernst and Young. [19]
  • In December 2016, Lim was awarded FMM Icon Award 2016 by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM).[20]
  • In 2019, Lim was awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards by Entrepreneur Insight at the 100 Most Influential Young Entrepreneurs Award 2019.[21]
  • In 2020, Lim was awarded with Most People Focused CEO (Silver) in HR Excellence Awards 2020. [22]

Philanthropy and charity[]

Lim and his wife, Puan Sri Tong together with Vincent Tan on a special three days mission to distribute aid to the Syrian refugees in Turkey.[23]

Lim is a commissioner and volunteer of Tzu Chi Foundation. Lim first got involved in Tzu Chi’s fund raising efforts in 2004, thanks to his wife, a full time Tzu Chi volunteer for years. Lim also pledged to go down to the ground to raise funds for charity, during an experience-sharing session at Tzu Chi in Kepong on 13 Oct 2017. [24] Despite having to manage a huge corporation, Lim took time off to attend Tzu Chi’s volunteer course to be a “qualified and certified” volunteer.

In 2009, Top Glove Foundation was founded by Lim with the objective of providing funds for the purpose of charity, education and activities related to environment and community.[25]
