But the Dark Digimon were driven back when Omegamon defeated Millenniumon. In the present, the Dark Digimon were divided into two factions: those wishing to revive Milleniummon and those that seek to release Negamon and destroy the Digital World.

Negamon[]

Negamon (ネガーモン, Negāmon) is a powerful Dark Digimon behind the events of the series. As revealed by Algomon, Negamon is a manifestation of the Digital World's instinct to evolve and its darker nature. On many occasions, Negamon has caused disasters to help push the Digimon to evolve further through conflict and the accumulation of knowledge. One such disaster is the ancient war between Ghoulmon, his Army of Darkness and the Army of Light. However, the army was defeated with the appearance of Omegamon to destroy Millenniummon and Negamon remained sealed away.

Negamon is responsible for many of the events of the series, including sending the Algomon and Eyesmon to wreck havoc in Tokyo. His purpose is to cause another disaster powered by the data flowing through the Network. However, the data contains the fear and chaos in the hearts of humans and fills Negamon with more negative energy than he ever anticipated. After WarGreymon destroys ZeedMillenniummon for good, Negamon begins actively working to gain his freedom by having the Soundbirdmon brainwash a Burpmon into consuming the data of the Tree of Knowledge in an attempt to keep the Chosen Ones from getting information from. Negamon later sends a swarm of Algomon to test Taichi and Agumon, with Ultimate Algomon warning the duo that his master will soon begin the Great Catastrophe. Valkyrimon later reveals to Taichi that the only thing that can stop Negamon and the Great Catastrophe is Omegamon if his power can be unlocked again.

Once the Chosen Ones unlock the mystery of their Crests, Devimon appears to Takeru and Patamon in a dream to warn them that the approaching Great Catastrophe which will transform everything into a white void. The Soundbirdmon attack the Tree and fuse into Ghoulmon who is destroyed by Seraphimon and Ophanimon. After Ghoulmon's death, Negamon emerges to begin the Great Catastrophe and the monoliths of the Crests suddenly fly away as a crack appears in the sky leading into a white void containing Negamon.

Negamon begins sucking up the Digital World into its void, sucking up the Chosen Ones as well, although they are protected by their Digivices. The Ultimate Algomon appears to the Chosen Ones and reveals the true purpose of Negamon while a swarm of Champion Algomon stop the partner Digimon from intervening. Algomon warns that all of the negative energy that Negamon has absorbed from the data flowing through the Network has corrupted Negamon, giving it an insatiable hunger to consume and overwriting its original purpose. As a result, Negamon now intends to consume all existences into an infinite void, leaving nothing behind. Despite the efforts of the Champion Algomon and the Ultimate Algomon digivolving into Mega, the Chosen Ones and their Digimon are reunited and destroy all of Negamon's Algomon minions, digivolving into Mega themselves in the process. Voiced by: Ryōtarō Okiayu

But when the Chosen Ones oppose him, Devimon uses Milleniummon's power to digivolve himself into the Ultimate-level Artificial Fallen Angel Digimon NeoDevimon (ネオデビモン, NeoDebimon) and then the mindless Mega-level Fallen Angel Digimon DanDevimon (ダンデビモン, DonDebimon, DoneDevimon) before being destroyed by a partially complete WarGreymon.

Devimon endured his physical demise due to his connection Angemon and is later given a temporary new body by Sakkakumon, Millenniummon's servant, who had kidnapped Taichi, Yamato, Koshiro and Takeru and forced them to fight copies of their defeated opponents. After a failed attempt by Devimon to force him digivolve into NeoDevimon, Angemon absorbs Devimon to awaken his ability to become MagnaAngemon, although Devimon's consciousness lingers within him.

Devimon later appears to Takeru and Patamon in a dream, first as Tukaimon, to warn them that he can sense the coming Great Catastrophe which Devimon believes to be impossible to stop, digivolving through his various forms as he talks before finally settling on DoneDevimon. Upon hearing the story, Tailmon recalls how Devimon was researching digivolution and that when he had used that method to become NeoDevimon, it drove him insane and caused utter destruction before his method was used by the Vademon to resurrect Millenniummon, causing the same thing. After Negamon is released, Takeru and Patamon recall Devimon's warning that the Great Catastrophe involves everything vanishing into a white void.

After Seraphimon and Ofanimon are swallowed by Abaddomon, a shadowy image of DoneDevimon emerges from Seraphimon and rescues him while SkullKnightmon saves Ofanimon. Turning back into Devimon, he declares that he hears the voices resonating beyond the world and gathering hope, declaring that despite the destruction in sight, the light of hope glows bright, creating a miracle. Devimon declares that the whim of those who are shadows must also be the same as SkullKnightmon appears over Ofanimon. As Devimon fades away with a black feather dropping in front of Seraphimon, he calls Seraphimon his dear old friend, realizing that this is the answer that Seraphimon has reached to Devimon's earlier question about whether hope is just as indestructible as despair.

SkullKnightmon first appears when Angemon turns back into a Digi-Egg following the destruction of Velgremon. SkullKnightmon steals the Digi-Egg and takes it to Devimon to be corrupted, fighting MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon who overpowers her. When she asks for more power, Devimon uses the crystal containing Moon=Millenniummon to digivolve SkullKnightmon into her Ultimate form of AxeKnightmon who survives the battle and the destruction of Devimon's castle. She then uses the crystal to digivolve NeoDevimon into his Mega form of DoneDevimon.

AxeKnightmon reappears when the Chosen Ones arrive on the Eternal Continent. A reborn Patamon digivolves into Angemon and manages to force AxeKnightmon to revert back into SkullKnightmon, but the Chosen Ones are scattered in the process. Shortly thereafter, SkullKnightmon kidnaps Hikari after Agumon is exhausted following a battle with a Dark Digimon. Chased by the Chosen Ones, SkullKnightmon takes Hikari to a ritual altar and resonates with her in order to digivolve back into AxeKnightmon. AxeKnightmon then imprisons Hikari within her armor and begins a ritual on the Vademon's orders to sacrifice herself to resurrect Millenniummon. As the Chosen Ones assault the altar to rescue Hikari and stop the ritual, Hikari locates Tailmon's uncorrupted soul within AxeKnightmon's body. Agumon digivolves all the way to WarGreymon who breaks into AxeKnightmon and rescues Hikari and Tailmon. AxeKnightmon is destroyed in the process, breaking the ritual while Tailmon is released to become Hikari's partner.

Not long after, a MarineDevimon who possesses a shard of Millenniummon nearly succeeds in forcing Tailmon to dark digivolve back into AxeKnightmon, causing a shadowy form of AxeKnightmon to surround Tailmon and attack Greymon. However, Hikari is able to break through to her partner who digivolves into Angewomon instead.

Unbeknownst to the Chosen Ones and their partners, SkullKnightmon survived her physical destruction and much like Devimon, her consciousness continues to exist as a separate entity within Tailmon, although she doesn't reveal her presence as Devimon did on a few occasions. During the final battle with Negamon, a shadowy image of SkullKnightmon emerges from Ofanimon to rescue her from Abaddomon while DoneDevimon does the same thing to save Seraphimon before he reverts into Devimon. Devimon explains that the light of hope from across the real world glows bright, creating a miracle. Devimon declares that the whim of those who are shadows must also be the same before he and SkullKnightmon fade away.
