List of heads of government of Romania

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list consisting of all the heads of government (i.e. Prime Ministers) of the modern and contemporary Romanian state, from the establishment of the United Principalities in 1859 to the present-day during the early 21st century. The incumbent Prime Minister, as of 9 February 2022, is Nicolae Ionel Ciucă, a former Romanian army general who subsequently became a politician in 2020 after joining the National Liberal Party (PNL).

Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă is currently in charge of a grand coalition government, legally known as the National Coalition for Romania (or simply CNR for short), which comprises three political parties, more specifically two senior coalition partners which are the PNL and the PSD (the biggest of the two and the biggest in the current ruling coalition overall) as well as a junior coalition partner which is the UDMR/RMDSZ.[1]

Ciucă is currently involved in a significant plagiarism scandal regarding his doctoral thesis for which he was asked to step down by several leaders of the parliamentary opposition.[2] To the present day, incumbent Prime Minister Ciucă hasn't yet stepped down as he still rejects the plagiarism accusations and will therefore most likely not resign at all in the future.[3]

United Principalities (1859–1881)[]

From 1859 to 1862, the two Romanian principalities (more specifically Moldavia and Wallachia) had their own government each, and a cabinet, seated in Iași and Bucharest respectively. In 1862, Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza changed the Constitution and from then on there has been a single unified central government, permanently seated in Bucharest, the capital of Romania.
