Prior to 1990, the governor and lieutenant governor were elected in separate elections; since then they have run together on the same ticket.[citation needed]

As of November 2020, there are six former lieutenant governors of Iowa still alive, the oldest being Robert D. Fulton (served 1965–1969, born 1929). The most recent death of a former lieutenant governor of Iowa was that of Roger Jepsen (served 1969–1973, born 1928), on November 13, 2020. The most recently serving lieutenant governor to die was Joy Corning (served 1991–1999, born 1932), on May 20, 2017.
