List of megaprojects in Bangladesh

This is a list of megaprojects. "Megaprojects are temporary endeavours (i.e. projects) characterized by: large investment commitment, vast complexity (especially in organizational terms), and long-lasting impact on the economy, the environment, and society". The number of such projects is so large that the list may never be fully completed.

Roads and transport infrastructure[]

Padma Rail Link Dhaka, Mawa, Bhanga, Jessore 41 km [5] --% completed $4.63 billion Construction began on January 1, 2016 and to be completed by June 30, 2024.[6] Total length of the route is around 169 km. The work has been divided into 4 sections. Secion-1: Dhaka - Gandaria (3 km), Section-2: Gandaria - Mawa (37 km), Section-3: Mawa - Bhanga Junction - Bhanga (42 km), Section-4: Bhanga Junction - Jessore (87 km).
Dhaka MRT Line-1 (Airport Route) Dhaka 18.8 km [7] Proposed $6.1 billion The line will be underground. The length of this line will be 19.872 km (12.348 mi). The line will have 12 underground stations. Stations will be constructed at Shahjalal International Airport, Shahjalal International Airport Terminal 3, Khilkhet, Jamuna Future Park, Notun Bazar, Uttar Badda, Badda, Hatirjheel East, Rampura, Malibagh, Rajarbagh, and Kamalapur Railway Station.[8]

Dhaka MRT Line-6 Dhaka 20.1 km [7] 73% completed[10] $2.8 billion Dhaka Metro Rail Line-6 consists of 16 elevated stations each 180m long and 20.1 km of electricity powered light rail tracks. Construction began on 26 June 2016 and is expected to end by 2022.

Dhaka Elevated Expressway Dhaka 46.73 km [11] --% completed $1.63 billion Construction began on 2011 and to be completed by December 30, 2022.[12] The work has been divided into 3 sections. Secion-1: Shahjalal international airport to Banani (7.45 km), Section - 2: Banani to Moghbazar (5.85 km), Section - 3: Moghbazar to Kutubkhali (6.43 km). Airport-Banani section has made 59% progress. Banani-Moghbazar section has made 9% progress.[13]
Karnaphuli Tunnel Chattogram, Karnaphuli River 3.32 km [14] 75% completed[15] $1.2 billion First underwater tunnel in South Asian region, part of Dhaka-Chattogram-Cox's Bazaar highway network. Karnaphuli Tunnel is expected to be completed by December, 2022.[4]
Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Railway Link Chattogram, Cox's Bazar 100 km [16] 62% completed[17] $2.13 billion Civil works for the project began in March 2018 and the deadline for the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar rail line is June 2022. Project officials are hopeful of a 2022 completion or early 2023.[18]
 Sirajganj, Jamuna River 4.8 km [19] 1% completed $1.6 billion 4.8 km long railway bridge near Bangabandhu Bridge, is expected to be the largest dedicated rail bridge in the country.[20][21]
Rupsha Rail Bridge Khulna, Rupsha RIver 5.13 km [22] 75% completed -- The bridge has 7 nos. of 102.4m long Double Warren Open-web Truss Girders with 136 nos. of 32.2 m long Composite Plate Girders for Viaducts on either side.
Hazrat Shahjalal (R) International Airport Terminal 3  Dhaka -- 22% completed[23] $2.5 billion Expansion will include a passenger terminal with a floor area of roughly 226,000 m2 (2,430,000 sq ft); a 5,900 m2 (64,000 sq ft) square VVIP complex; a 41,200 m2 (443,000 sq ft) cargo building; and multi-level car park building with a tunnel. Upon completion of the third terminal, passenger handling capacity of the airport will increase to 20 million from current 8 million per annum. Cargo handling capacity will also increase to 500,000 from 200,000 tonnes annually [24]
Dhaka Subway  Dhaka 238 km [25] Proposed $8 billion Dhaka Subway is an underground urban rail network being planned in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, by the Bangladesh Bridge Authority. It will have 11 lines with a total length of 258 kilometres (160 mi). The first subway expected to be built is a route 28.71 kilometres (17.84 mi) long between Tongi and Jhilmil at a cost of $8 billion. Three more routes are likely to be built by 2030 with the entire network completed in 2041.[26]

Matarbari Power Plant Cox's Bazar 1200 [32] 30% completed 4.5 Billion Some 30% of construction work on the 1200MW Matarbari coal-fired power plant was completed as of July last as Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL), the implementing agency, has a target to complete the most expensive scheme by June 2023, shows an official document.
Nuclear Power Plant Southern Bangladesh Proposed On 11 October 2021, while inaugurating installation of reactor at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, PM Sheikh Hasina expressed government's plan to build second power plant in Southern Bangladesh.[33]
