List of number-one R&B singles of 1985 (U.S.)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

These are the Billboard magazine R&B singles chart number one hits of 1985. Excluding "Operator" by Midnight Star (which began its run at the top in December 1984), 19 singles reached number one during the year. Both "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)" by Freddie Jackson and "Part-Time Lover" by Stevie Wonder tied for the longest reign of all number one singles at six weeks each; the former was later named the R&B single of the year. Eight acts reached number one for the first time during the year: Freddie Jackson, Eugene Wilde, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, USA For Africa, Whitney Houston, Loose Ends, René & Angela, and Ready for the World. Additionally, Isley-Jasper-Isley, having previously reached number one with their progenitor group The Isley Brothers, had their first chart topper under the Isley-Jasper-Isley name with "Caravan of Love". Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love" became her twentieth number one, making her the artist with the most chart-toppers on the chart. Houston, Jackson, Wilde, and Kool & the Gang were the only artists to have multiple number-ones during 1985.
