2000s[]

Year Name of victim(s) Location body found Notes
3 January 2000 Lola Shenkoya Body not found Lola Shenkoya was a 27-year-old woman who vanished from Ealing Broadway on 3 January 2000. Police believe her to have been killed by serial sex offender and suspected serial killer Andrzej Kunowski, who had murdered a 12-year-old girl nearby in 1997 and who is also the prime suspect in the murder of Elizabeth Chau, a girl who disappeared from almost the exact same location as Shenkoya some months earlier. Kunowski was known to have been working in a dry-cleaning shop on the Uxbridge Road the day Chau was last seen walking past Ealing police station. Although he was questioned over their murders, no concrete evidence was found to link them to him before he died in prison in 2009.[1][2][3]
January 2000 Roger Ormsby Manchester Roger Ormsby's body was in the driver's seat of his BMW when it was discovered burning in an alley in Whalley Range on 5 January 2000. The 34-year-old businessman's killer had shot him in the back of his head.[4]
January 2000 Gabriel Egharevba Manchester 17-year-old Gabriel Egharevba was shot when he and a friend were being chased by two men on motorcycles whilst riding their bikes through Longsight on 12 January 2000. Detectives thought it was because Gabriel had been mistaken for someone else.[5]
March 2000 Christopher Clarke Birmingham 22-year-old Christopher Clarke was attacked by a gang of ten or more men as he was leaving a nightclub in Small Heath in early March, and one of the assailants pierced his heart with a thin-bladed weapon, causing his death.[6] A man was acquitted of the killing when witnesses refused to give evidence against him, but would be convicted in 2005 of the murders of two teenage girls shot at a party in a different area of Birmingham in 2003.[7]
March 2000 Craig Mirfield Leeds Craig Mirfield, a 34-year-old car dealer, was shot in his car in Gipton on 15 March 2000 while trying to drive away from a man with a gun. A man was prosecuted for Craig's murder, but his trial ended early due to reservations about the reliability of the two main witnesses.[8]
April 2000 Sarah Benford Body not found 14-year-old Sarah Benford vanished in April 2000 and although her body has never been found, her disappearance is being treated as a murder investigation. Sarah was described by police as a "troubled teenager"; she was in care and ran away from Welford House children's home in Welford Road, Northampton on 4 April. She visited her mother in Kettering on 6 April and there were various other sightings of her in Kettering that day. During 2003, a number of people were arrested and properties were searched but then the investigation stalled. In 2016, police searched woods near Warkton in Northamptonshire – an area known to have been used by acquaintances of Sarah for storing stolen goods and other items. During the search, a handgun was found but police did not believe it was connected to Sarah's disappearance.[9]
May 2000 Nicola Ray Body not found Nicola Ray has not been seen since she parted company with a friend following a night out in Basildon on 2 May 2000. She was 29 or 30 years old at the time. The man she was engaged to when she vanished has been arrested twice on suspicion of her murder, but neither arrest led to a charge.[10][11]
10 May 2000 Frank McPhee Maryhill, Glasgow Gangster Frank McPhee, himself twice cleared of murder, was shot by a sniper in a block of flats opposite his own as he returned home.[12]
13 May 2000 Cheryll Grover Newbury, Berkshire Cheryll Grover, 21, was last seen alive by a visitor to her home on Audley Close, Turnpike, Newbury, at 10:30 pm on Friday 12 May 2000. She was speaking to a friend on the telephone at 2:35 am on Saturday 13 May, but efforts made by her estranged husband, Steven, to contact her later that same day came to nothing. Concerned for Cheryll's welfare, Steven and his mother visited Cheryll's home at 3:30 pm and Steven climbed the drainpipe to reach the first floor bedroom window. Inside, Cheryll was found dead in her bedroom, having been strangled with a dressing gown cord. Police suspected that she had been selling drugs from her home and an appeal led to a number of people coming forward. A 32-year-old man was arrested but released without charge.[13][14] Although Cheryll's death was investigated as a murder, the inquest returned an open verdict. In May 2006, Thames Valley Police announced that her death was being reviewed by a cold case police team.[15]
May 2000 Clifton Bryan and Dennis Wilson Leeds The bodies of Clifton "Junior" Bryan, 29, and Dennis Wilson, 32, were found in a car in Leeds on 15 May 2000, but forensic evidence would reveal they had been shot dead in a house in Manchester before being taken out of the city. The murders were thought to have been gangland ones, and in 2001, a man was cleared of them both.[16][17]
June 2000 Shkelquim Brakka King's Lynn, Norfolk A stab wound received outside a nightclub caused Kosovan Shkelquim Brakka's death on 4 June 2000. Someone charged with the 26-year-old's murder was acquitted of it at trial.[18][19]
June 2000 Kellie Pratt Body not found Last seen talking to someone on her mobile phone while standing outside a pub in the red-light district of Norwich on 11 June, Kellie Pratt had become a sex worker to help pay for a drug habit after having moved to Great Yarmouth from her home city of Newcastle in 1998. An associate who phoned the 28-year-old within 15 minutes of that sighting was told by her that she was with a client, but it is not known who that client was. Kellie's disappearance has led to a homicide investigation by the police despite the fact that her body hasn't been discovered.[20] A link has been suggested to serial East Anglia prostitute killer Steve Wright.[21]
June 2000 Karen Chandler Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire A cause of death could not be established for 40-year-old Karen Chandler because her car was set alight with her body inside. Police charged a man in his 60s with her murder, and at the trial, it was asserted by the prosecution that the man, who acknowledged that he was riding his bicycle on Salisbury Plain on 20 June (the day she went missing) but denied that he had anything to do with her death, killed her because he was infatuated with her but saw no chance of a relationship between them developing. With the evidence against him being entirely circumstantial in nature, the jury decided to find him not guilty.[22]
June 2000 Menelik Robinson Clapton, London Menelik Robinson was driving along Upper Clapton Road on Sunday, 25 June when a motorcycle stopped in front of him, prompting him to bring his car to a halt. Another motorcycle then drew up next to the car, the passenger of this other motorcycle got off it and 20-year-old Menelik was shot by him several times.[23][24]
July 2000 Mark Corley Near Bolam, County Durham Grantham man Mark Corley was fatally shot in the head probably within days of leaving his home town for the last time on 7 July 2000. His skeletal remains were discovered in a rural area of County Durham in December 2000. Five men were due to go on trial in early 2002 for the murder of the 23-year-old, but a judge called off the trial after finding that the police had unlawfully bugged conversations between those men and their solicitors.[25]
13 July 2000 Iwona Kaminska Body not found 20-year-old Polish girl Iwona Kaminska disappeared after leaving her workplace at a Polish-owned business in King Street, Hammersmith, London, on 13 July 2000. Her case is being treated as a possible murder. Over the previous year, two other young women had disappeared from the street in Ealing four miles away, and the prime suspect in those cases was Polish serial sex offender and suspected serial killer Andrzej Kunowski before he died in 2009. Kunowski has also been linked to Kaminska's disappearance. Kunowski had murdered a girl nearby to where Kaminska vanished from in Hammersmith in 1997.[3][2][1][26][27]
July 2000 Beatrice Wilson Poole, Dorset Beatrice Wilson, 74, was knifed to death in her sheltered accommodation. A boy who was 15 when Mrs Wilson died was charged with her murder owing to a confession said to have been made to a friend and to fibres found in her flat seeming to link him to the crime – a crime apparently committed when a burglary went wrong. At the subsequent trial, however, he was acquitted.[28][29]
August 2000 Greg Watson London 21-year-old Greg Watson died in hospital after a nighttime attack in Kensal Road on 28 August – an attack in which he was stabbed whilst intervening in an attempt to stop a group of youths from trying to accost a female cousin of his. The Notting Hill Carnival was on in the area at the time. Crimewatch later showed footage of the incident, which CCTV had recorded in low quality.[30]
August 2000 Ronald Fuller Attacked in Grays, died in hospital in Basildon (both in Essex) 30-year-old Ronald Fuller was shot repeatedly outside his bungalow on 29 August by a gunman who, according to the woman who was Ronald's partner at the time, calmly and unhurriedly walked towards his motorcycle (on which he left the scene) after committing the deed. Almost a year previously, a man was fatally stabbed during an incident at the Epping Forest Country Club while Ronald (also known as Ron or Ronnie) was on duty there as a doorman, and he was charged over his alleged part in the incident, as was another man. The charges were dropped before the case was due to come to court, though, and there is nothing to indicate that the police have formally linked Ronald's murder with that stabbing.[31][32][33]
August 2000 Abdul Bhatti London 28-year-old Abdul Bhatti was punched and kicked at the Notting Hill Carnival at around 7.30 pm on 28 August after intervening when a friend was being assaulted by gang members, and died in hospital on the evening of 29 August.[34] Nine young men were later locked up for their roles in the violence that culminated in the fatal attack on Abdul, but no one has been convicted of his murder or manslaughter.[35]
September 2000 Susan Kelly Liverpool Susan Kelly, 38, was working as a sex worker in Liverpool when she was murdered on 4 September 2000. Her body was found in an alley on Blessington Road, Anfield, and she had suffered a number of violent injuries. A man was cleared of her murder in 2003 and others have since been arrested then released.[36][37]
September 2000 Clifford Clarke Uppingham, Rutland The body of the former plumber and hospital porter was discovered in his flat by his brother on 10 September. He had been stabbed in the chest and neck, and it was noted at the inquest that his death could have occurred between two and four days prior to his corpse being found.[38] Fifteen years after the 56-year-old's murder, two men were arrested on suspicion of it, but to date no one has actually been charged with the crime.[39]
September 2000 Thomas Ramsey Manchester 16-year-old Thomas Ramsey's body was found with two gunshot wounds – one to the head, the other to the neck – in a park in Levenshulme on 19 September.[40] His crime boss was acquitted of his murder but convicted of the murder of a man from another gang.[41] Thomas had been acquitted himself of the October 1999 murder of Judah Dewar – a murder linked to Thomas due to the discovery of one of his fingerprints on the victim's car.[42]
September 2000 Vicky Glass Danby, North Yorkshire 21-year-old Vicky Glass went missing from Middlesbrough town centre on 24 September 2000. Her body was found twenty miles away in a stream in Danby on the North York Moors approximately six weeks later. Vicky was working as a sex worker at the time of her death. In 2018, a specialist police team was set up to revisit the murders of Vicky, Donna Keogh and Rachel Wilson. A Home Office review of all three cases said: "It is generally accepted that initial enquiries and investigations were inadequate."[43] A link has been suggested with convicted killer Christopher Halliwell.[44] Cleveland Police believe there could be a link to serial prostitute killer Steve Wright, whose victims were all found in streams or near water.[45] In September 2021, police announced a re-investigation by a historical crimes unit into Vicky Glass's murder, only two months after Wright had been arrested for another historical murder: that of Victoria Hall in 1999.[46][47]
October 2000 Alan Decabral Ashford, Kent 40-year-old Alan Decabral was shot dead on 5 October as he sat in the passenger seat of a car parked in a busy car park. It happened six months after he gave evidence that helped to get Kenneth Noye convicted of a fatal road-rage attack, and the idea that the gunman was acting on Noye's behalf has therefore been officially considered. However, it has also been noted by detectives investigating the case that the shooting could have been carried out because of a serious falling-out with someone in the criminal world (a world Decabral is known to have had dealings with).[48]
October 2000 Clay Benjamin Liverpool The 24-year-old was stabbed in the heart on 21 October while at a blues party in Toxteth. A man in his 30s was cleared of his murder.[49]
November 2000 Vincent Clay Salford, Greater Manchester Two men shot 27-year-old Vincent Clay in Amersham Street while he was talking to his girlfriend. Police charged a man over his death, but his trial was terminated when the court was informed that the prosecution would not be offering any more evidence.[50][51]
December 2000 Zoe Parker Chelsea Harbour, River Thames, London Zoe Louise Parker was 24 and last seen with two men in Hounslow, west London, on 6 December 2000. Zoe had learning difficulties and no fixed address – she stayed with friends and at hostels in various places such as London, Colchester and Bournemouth. She also was known to turn to sex work when times were desperate. Shortly before her death she changed her name to Cathy Dennis.[52]

The upper part of Zoe's body was discovered in the River Thames on 17 December: someone had sawn her body in half before dumping the upper part of it in the river. (It is unknown what happened to the lower half.)[52] Police suspect she could have been a victim of Anthony Hardy (the "Camden Ripper"), who dismembered his known victims after killing them in a nearby area between January 2002 and December 2002.[53]

January 2001 Andrew Williams Peckham, London Someone shot 30-year-old Andrew Williams and a friend of his following a confrontation, killing Andrew and injuring his friend (who ultimately survived the attack) badly enough for his condition in hospital to be described later as "serious but stable". Andrew and his friend had just left a nightclub when the trouble started.[54]
February 2001 Peter Beaumont-Gowling Newcastle The 52-year-old hadn't long been out of prison for money laundering when he was shot dead on Valentine's Day at the doorstep of his flat in Jesmond. Two suspects caught on CCTV have always managed to avoid being charged with the offence. Peter Beaumont-Gowling had over half a million pounds in drug money on him when the police apprehended him for money laundering, and since the confiscating of that money prevented him from giving any of it to any of the drug dealers he was a courier for, a theory developed that he was killed because he refused even after his release from prison to compensate any of them for money lost as a consequence of his arrest.[55]
March 2001 Ian Dowling Grantham, Lincolnshire 39-year-old Ian Dowling died after receiving gunshot wounds outside his house on 15 March. Accused in court of masterminding the act and paying a hitman to carry it out because Dowling was having an affair with his wife, a onetime close friend of his was convicted in 2003 of conspiracy to murder, but the conviction was overturned by appeal judges in 2005 on the grounds that it was unsafe because it hinged largely on the police bugging conversations between him and his solicitors when they shouldn't have.[56][57]
March 2001 Stuart Lubbock Roydon, Essex Stuart Lubbock, 31, died during a party at the home of entertainer Michael Barrymore on 31 March 2001. His death was treated as an accidental drowning but an inquest found he had suffered injuries consistent with sexual assault. In a documentary, Barrymore: The Body in the Pool, shown on Channel 4 on 6 February 2020, detective chief inspector Stephen Jennings of Essex Police stated that mistakes had been made in the original investigation and that he believed Stuart had been raped and murdered.[58]
April 2001 Rebecca Hall Bradford, West Yorkshire 19-year-old Rebecca Hall went missing from her home in Little Horton, Bradford on 13 April. Her body was found in Thornton Street on 26 April; she had suffered severe head injuries. Rebecca had worked as a sex worker and had a four-month-old son. Police reopened the investigation into her murder after local killer John Taylor's conviction for the murder of Leanne Tiernan in 2000, in part because Rebecca's body appeared to have been stored for a period and this was a hallmark of Taylor.[59][60] Her murder has also been linked to Bradford serial killer Stephen Griffiths, who lived 800 metres from where she was found dead, and he was interviewed by police about her murder in 2010 yet refused to answer any of their questions.[61] In January 2019, police arrested a 37-year-old woman and then released her under investigation.[62]
April 2001 Corey Wright and Wayne Henry Clapton, London 20-year-old Corey Wright was a passenger in 19-year-old Wayne Henry's car when bullets were fired at it as it drove away from the Chimes nightclub on Saturday, 21 April, killing both of them. Corey had been convicted along with five other youths of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm against Kingsley Iyasara, a 16-year-old boy beaten and fatally shot in the Finsbury Park district of London in February 1997.[63]
12 May 2001 Andre Aylward London 27-year-old Andre Aylward was shot in his car. He had been driving his black E28 5 Series BMW along Valleyfield Road in Streatham at about 2:10 am on 12 May 2001 when six shots were fired at it from a handgun. After the shooting, he lost control of the car and crashed. He had been hit twice in the head and neck and was taken to King's College Hospital, where he died at around 4 am.

A few minutes before the shooting, a grey 7 Series BMW car was seen alongside his and the police said that they were seeking to identify it. It was thought that the attack might have been a case of road rage or mistaken identity. The police also said that they found nothing in his background to suggest that he had been involved in any criminal activity. Aylward's murder was featured on Crimewatch in July 2001.[64][65]

26 May 2001 Keith Rogers Died in hospital in Harlow in Essex from the effects of a fire in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire 40-year-old Keith Rogers managed to escape the fire in his first-floor flat by jumping from a window, but died in hospital four weeks later from organ failure caused by smoke inhalation. The fire had been started in the early hours of Sunday, 29 April by igniting petrol that had been poured through the flat's letterbox.[66][67]
14 June 2001 Colin Beer Plymouth, Devon It was thought that 42-year-old Colin Beer had been involved in an incident of road rage. He had been out drinking at the Hyde Park pub in the Mutley district on Saturday 9 June 2001 and was later seen walking in and out of traffic up to North Hill. He was seen to make contact with a wing mirror of a blue Peugeot 406 car, either hitting it or bumping into it. Witnesses then saw a man get out of a red Vauxhall Cavalier car at 6:15 pm and hit Colin Beer, who fell to the ground and suffered from a fractured skull after hitting his head. The car was said to have had an eight-inch black sticker on the offside of the boot. The driver was described as being aged around 30 years old, of a medium build, and with a thin face, short brown hair and a goatee beard. He was said to have been wearing a white shirt and blue or black jeans.

Colin Beer died in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth on 14 June 2001 – five days after being attacked. The incident was featured on Crimewatch in July 2001.[64][68]

15 June 2001 Jody Burns Attacked in Runcorn, Cheshire, died at Whiston Hospital Jody Burns sustained a fatal injury to his head during a disturbance in Runcorn town centre in the early hours – a disturbance involving up to 60 people and in which he was said to have been trying to act as peacemaker. Police charged five men with violent disorder relating to the brawl but nobody has been charged with 27-year-old Jody's murder.[69]
July 2001 Richie Clayton Aigburth, Liverpool 30-year-old Richie Clayton, a father-of-two, was shot on Belgrave Road, Aigburth, just before 8 pm on 25 July 2001. The gunman and his accomplice had arrived in a green Ford Mondeo which was later found alight.[70]
August 2001 Alphonso Madden Manchester 27-year-old Alphonso Madden had shots fired at his car from the pavement while driving through Longsight on 14 August. The car then collided with bollards at the junction of two roads in the district, but the actual cause of his death was a chest wound inflicted by a bullet.[71][72]
September 2001 Yasser Nazir Bradford, West Yorkshire 16-year-old Yasser Nazir was fatally shot in his car by a masked gunman as he drove out of a petrol station in Heaton, Bradford, on 5 September 2001. It was believed that Yasser was killed in revenge for the shooting of a rival gang member.[73]
September 2001 Lindsey Scholes Died in hospital from the effects of a fire in Barnsley, South Yorkshire Lindsey Scholes, 17, suffered burns and smoke inhalation in a fire which was deliberately started at a house in Milgate Street, Royston, in the early hours of 8 September 2001. Lindsey was rescued by firefighters but died two days later in hospital.[74]
September 2001 "Adam" River Thames, London Unknown boy; also known as the "Torso in the Thames" case.
8 October 2001 Dean Eccleston Manchester Father-of-three Dean Eccleston, 24, was hit by several bullets in a street in Chorlton-on-Medlock while wearing a bulletproof vest.[75]
13 October 2001 Michael Madden Port Glasgow Fatally shot at the front door of his home on 13 October 2001, Michael Madden was a loan shark and 44 years old. The 2003 trial of a man accused of his murder ended with a not proven verdict.[76][77]
c. 20 October 2001 Hugh Cameron River Skeagh, Glenarm, County Antrim, Northern Ireland Hugh Cameron's body was found in the river about a month after he went missing. He had been stabbed, beaten and possibly tortured before his death. It is believed the Ulster Defence Association were behind his murder, but nobody has ever been charged with it.[78][79][80]
27 October 2001 Jimmy Millen Hollington, Hastings, East Sussex Jimmy Millen, 27, was shot outside his home while working on his car in Tile Barn Road, Hollington by two men dressed in black and riding on a black motorbike.[81][82] Following his death, his family revealed his involvement in the murder of Jason Martin-Smith and named their suspects to the police due to this association.[83]
1 November 2001 Paul Easton Grimsby, Lincolnshire Paul Easton's body was found at an address in Hainton Avenue. He had been held in a headlock for half an hour, bringing about death by suffocation.[84]
5 November 2001 Michaela Hague Sheffield Michaela Hague was a 25-year-old sex worker. She was stabbed 19 times and then dumped on wasteland at Spitalfields, near Sheffield city centre. Before dying, she managed to give a description of her attacker to a police officer. She said her attacker was a white clean-shaven man with fair hair, and was wearing a wedding ring and drove a blue Ford Sierra with a roof rack.[85] A connection has been suggested with the murder of Dawn Shields in 1994 and a link with convicted killer Christopher Halliwell has been, too.[86]
16 November 2001 Brian Perry Bermondsey, London Brian Perry, who had helped to launder money from the 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery, died almost immediately after being hit by three bullets outside the office he ran his taxi business from. Two men were charged with the murder of the 63-year-old and acquitted at their 2006 trial.[87]
21 November 2001 Brian Hardwick Colne Road, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire Brian Hardwick, 50, was gunned down at his place of work, Huddersfield Car Electrical Services, and the only evidence at the scene, was that of robbery. He was shot in the head and chest with a small-calibre weapon, but not found dead until the following day. On the day of his murder, Mr Hardwick had an argument with a man who wanted his car electrics checked but did not have an appointment for it. Later that day, Mr Hardwick was seen by his colleagues washing his hands, ready to go home, but found his car had a flat tyre caused deliberately, and so prepared to change it. His body was found at 8 am the next day by the owner of the garage. His killer, or killers, also took his cash card and used his PIN number to withdraw £350 from a cash machine at the Asda store on Bradford Road, Huddersfield, minutes after he was shot. The card has not been used since and has not been recovered.[88] There have been arrests over this murder but no convictions.[citation needed]
December 2001 Donald Marlow Harriot Clapton, London A person or persons unknown fatally beat the 28-year-old at his East London home on 30 December.[89]
January 2002 Michael French London At a New Year's Eve party in a flat in Clapham, an artery in Michael French's chest was seriously damaged when, over alleged theft of money, he was punched by a man who had in that hand a cloth with a knife under it. Emergency services were called and an air ambulance took Michael to King's College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after dawn on New Year's Day. A man was charged with his murder, but claimed at the trial that he left the party to get drugs before the attack and did not go back to it. The jury believed him and acquitted him.[90]
January 2002 Abdulkalaq Hussain Ali Shepherd's Bush, London On 9 January 2002, Abdulkalaq Ali was stabbed to death outside a house where he and others had met for a social gathering, and one of those others was later acquitted of the crime. The prosecution had contended that the defendant had murdered Abdulkalaq Ali for having started a rumour alleging that members of his (i.e. the defendant's) tribe had raped men at a party in his native Somalia because no women had turned up to it.[91]
January 2002 Jacqueline Nyeko Kennington, London Dumped or left in a storage area of a block of flats after being murdered, she was discovered dead there on 13 January by two boys. Head injuries were what had caused her death, and detectives tracing the 24-year-old Brixton woman's final movements found the last sighting of her to have been at 10 pm on 10 January in St John's Crescent.[92]
February 2002 Brian Francis Oxford 51-year-old Brian Francis was fatally beaten at his flat – a flat in Blackbird Leys that drug users paid frequent visits to. Police removed a phone box from Merlin Road so it could be analysed by forensic scientists, for it was believed that a 999 call about the incident had been made from there.[93]
March 2002 Gladstone Johnson Birmingham A man was acquitted in February 2003 of the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Gladstone Johnson (known as Wayne) in a nightclub on 4 March 2002. Johnson had been found not guilty some two years prior to his own death of having played a part in the November 1998 murder of Daniel Brown at another Birmingham nightspot.[94][7]
March 2002 Exmoor Body in the Bag Winsford Hill, Winsford, Somerset The man's badly decomposed corpse was found wrapped in bin bags, a single green bed sheet and a single duvet on 13 March 2002. Also wrapped in them were a white pillowcase and a stereo wire, which Detective Superintendent Barrie Douglas said the victim might have been tied up with. He is thought to have died two to three years before being found. It is not clear if the body had been brought into the UK from abroad. In May 2002, detectives appealed on Crimewatch UK in the hope someone would recognise him, but nobody called in to say who he was. In September of that year, a new reconstruction of the man's head was released in a fresh appeal to identify him. He was 25–35 years old with black or dark brown hair and 5 ft 8–5 ft 9 ins tall. He was thought to have been Mediterranean, Middle Eastern or North African. He was wearing a gold chain that had a 22-carat pendant with verse 225 of the Koran, the Holy Text of Islam, inscribed in Arabic across it. A funeral was held for the mystery victim in September 2006.[95][96]
March 2002 Evan Jones Bristol Punched, kicked and attacked with a chain, the 46-year-old father-of-two was left for dead in busy York Road at about 11 pm on 13 March 2002 – an hour or so after he had been enjoying a quiet pint in that road's Beaufort pub. He died at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The weapon, believed to have been a bike chain or a large dog chain, was never found.[97]
March 2002 Michelle Bettles Scarning, near Dereham, Norfolk A Norwich prostitute and mother of three small children, none of whom was in her care, 22-year-old Michelle was last seen alive on 28 March in the Queens Road area of Norwich, where she was soliciting clients.[98] Her fully clothed body was found in a woodland off Podmore Lane, Scarning, three days later.[99] In June 2012 Professor David Wilson, a criminologist, suggested that the killer was likely serial prostitute killer Steve Wright, but police said they had found no evidence to link Wright to the crime.[100] A man was arrested in April 2003 after DNA testing showed his samples matched those taken from Bettles after she had died, and although the man admitted having picked her up for sex two days before she was last seen, he was later released due to insufficient evidence.[101]
April 2002 Aeon Shirley Manchester A member of a rival gang shot 18-year-old Aeon Shirley four times on 11 April, piercing his heart with one of the bullets. Police officers investigating the Longsight shooting found that witnesses to it were reluctant to assist them.[102]
April 2002 Les Bate Chapel Amble, Cornwall Les Bate, a 71-year-old millionaire, farmer and widower, was found dead in the utility room of his home in the village of Chapel Amble, Cornwall, on Sunday 14 April. He had been beaten and the attack triggered a cardiac episode, and his wallet was stolen and has never been found. Les had last been seen in his local pub on Friday 12 April. His home had been targeted in a burglary seven months earlier when thieves stole £47,000 in property and cash from his safe.[103]
24 April 2002 Terry Morgan Ennerdale, Rugby, Warwickshire 69-year-old grandad Terry Morgan was shot in the chest on the driveway of his home. Police think it may have been a contract killing. Despite rumours that Morgan was an anti-drugs campaigner for the local area, investigators found little to suggest that his murder had anything to do with such campaigning on his part.[104] There were arrests over the killing but all those arrested were released without charge.[citation needed]
20 May 2002 Sydney Baldwin Newcastle A window cleaner spotted the 44-year-old's body in his flat in Heaton the day after he was fatally bludgeoned.
