The following is a list of fictional or mythological winged horses.

Mythology[]

  • The ancient Pegasus is a mythological winged horse.
  • Devadatta is the winged flying white horse of Kalki in Hinduism. Bestowed by the God Shiva.
  • The Valkyrie rode winged horses from Asgard to choose souls among the slain in battle to go with them to Valhalla.[citation needed]
  • Al-Buraq was a mythical steed who carried prophet Muhammad.
  • Tianma was a winged 'celestial' horse in Chinese folklore.
  • A Chollima is a mythical winged horse which originates from the Chinese classics.
  • In Islamic tradition, Haizum is the horse of the archangel Gabriel.
  • Tulpar is a winged or swift horse in Turkic mythology.
  • Uchchaihshravas is the white winged horse, who comes from the churning of ocean of milk story, in Indian origin, along with the four tusked white color elephant Airavatam, wishing cow Kamadhenu and many more.

14th century[]

Medieval Serb nobleman, lord Momčilo of Pirlitor, was described in epic songs as having legendary winged horse Jabučilo.

1940s[]

  • 1940: Fantasia features winged horses in the Pastoral Symphony segment.

1970s[]

  • 1977: The Steve Miller Band releases "Book of Dreams" which featured a winged horse on the cover. This became a recurring theme for the band as it appeared on several of their subsequent releases.

1980s[]

  • 1981: Clash of the Titans (1981 film) features Pegasus, one of the sacred winged horses of Zeus. After being tamed by Perseus, he helps him on his journey on at least two occasions.
  • 1983: On 24 March in Tokimeki Tonight episode 24, a winged horse is whistled for by the demon prince
  • 1984: My Little Pony introduces their first "Pegasus ponies"
  • 1985: Swift Wind, winged unicorn from the television series She-Ra: Princess of Power
  • 1986: My Little Pony introduces Flutter Ponies
  • 1989: in April issue 123 of Titans featured a pegasus on the cover

2000s[]

  • 2000: On 8 July, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is released, containing stories about Abraxans, gigantic and powerful winged horses associated with Beauxbatons.
  • 2003: On 21 June, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is released, containing stories about Thestrals, skeletal winged horses.
  • 2005: Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus introduces Brietta.
  • 2006: My Little Pony introduces Breezies.
  • 2008: Page 28 of chapter 2 of the remake of Princess Knight the winged horse Opal is given as a birthday present to Sapphire.

2010s[]

  • 2010: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic "pegasus ponies" with wings compose 1/3 of the "Mane 6": Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, as well as many other characters, including alicorns. The series also features a rarely seen breed of winged horses with bat-like wings and other features.
  • 2014: Sofia the First features a winged horse boat in "Mom's the Word" and both Minimus and Electra are flying horses.
  • 2017: In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Thor: Ragnarok, the Valkyrie were seen riding winged horses during a flashback scene when fighting Hela.
  • 2019: The character Valkyrie was also seen riding a winged horse during the Battle of Earth in the MCU film Avengers: Endgame.
