MTV Base is a 24-hour music channel from ViacomCBS Networks EMEAA. There are three different feeds of MTV Base Africa, with one catering for the South African audience known as MTV Base South, one for West Africa, and another for rest of Africa, although there have been criticisms the African feed broadcasts Nigerian music only.[citation needed]

History[]

The channel was launched in February 2005 by Alex Okosi and his founding team Jandre Louw (Head of Marketing, Creative, Digital and Events), Dudu Qubu (Head of Production) and Maya Padmore (Head of Marketing and Communications), with a live music special with live performances from local African and international artists. MTV Base Africa also promoted MTV Europe and aired some of its reality series.

On 3 July 2013, Viacom International Media Networks Africa launched an localised feed of MTV Base exclusively for South Africa,[2] with local programming, advertising and VJs.[3]

On 5 March 2019, MTV Base expanded its reach in South Africa and its now available on DStv Access in HD. Comedy Central, BET, MTV, Nickelodeon (South Africa) switched to HD on the same day on DStv.
