Maja Göpel (born 27 June 1976 in Bielefeld) is a German political economist, researcher and sustainability scientist. She won an  [de] in 2019,[1] and the Erich Fromm Prize in 2021.[2]

Göpel graduated as a media economist at the University of Siegen and University of Hamburg and University of Kassel. From 2003 to 2006, she studied at the Foundation of the German Economy. She was in a working group of the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland. From 2006 to 2012, she worked for the World Future Council. From 2013 to 2017, she worked for the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. From 2017 to 2020 she was Secretary General of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), a body that advises the government on shaping global transformations towards sustainability.[3] She was from 2020 to 2021 the scientific director of The New Institute, founded in Hamburg in 2020.[3][4] In 2019, she was appointed honorary professor at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg.[5]

She is a member of the Club of Rome,[6] and of the World Future Council.[7]
