Marble Hornets (abbreviated MH) is an alternate reality game YouTube web series inspired by the Slender Man online mythos.[1][2] The first video was posted on YouTube on June 20, 2009, following a post that its creator, Troy Wagner, created on the Something Awful forum the previous day. It was one of the first webseries to be created around the character, with the first episode premiering exactly 10 days since the appearance of the original images of Slender Man on the Something Awful forums.[3]

To date, there are 92 videos on the main channel (87 entries).[4] The series also has 38 accompanying videos from a side-channel, "Totheark". These videos, as well as the eponymous "Totheark", have been featured multiple times throughout the story.[5][6] As of June 16, 2019, the principal channel has over 100 million views.[7]

On August 3, 2015, a follow-up series titled Clear Lakes 44 was uploaded onto the Marble Hornets channel. As of April 2016, Clear Lakes 44 was cancelled after the members of the creative team went their separate ways, as confirmed by Wagner.[8] On October 16, 2016, a successor to Clear Lakes 44, titled ECKVA, was launched.[9] On December 27, 2017, Wagner posted a new photo to his Twitter page, teasing a comic related to Marble Hornets slated for a 2018 release.[10] The first issue released on February 26, 2019, with a total of five being slated for the series.[11]

In 2015, a film spinoff Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story was released. Critical reception was overwhelmingly negative.[12]

Plot[]

Season 1[]

The series follows Jay Merrick (Troy Wagner), a young man who attempts to find out what happened during the filming of Marble Hornets, an unfinished student film helmed by Jay's friend, Alex Kralie (Joseph DeLage). Three years before, Alex abruptly ended the project after only three months of production. Before cutting contact with Jay, Alex gave him the tapes containing raw footage from the film and told Jay never to talk about it with him again.

By watching the tapes, Jay discovers that the filming seemed to be hampered by a figure known as "The Operator" who constantly stalked Alex no matter what time and place, whether on set with his actors, walking his dog to the park, or at his own home. Alex's physical and mental state became affected by The Operator such as Alex having severe coughing fits, severe paranoia to the point of affecting his personality making him more stressed, irritable, and aggressive towards cast members Tim Wright (Tim Sutton) and Sarah (Mary Kathleen Bishop) and camera operator Seth (Seth Wilson), and buying tons of tapes to film himself in order to catch footage of The Operator on camera. Along with this, Jay also finds that the tapes have extremely bad audio and visual problems such as audio distortion, visual distortion, static, inaudible audio at times, missing footage, and no audio. Most of these are assumed to be The Operator's doing. Jay does speculate that some of these problems might be Alex's doing instead. The Operator soon begins invading Jay's personal life, inducing him to set up cameras in his apartment. Posting the tapes to YouTube as "Entries" also nets Jay cryptic and threatening responses from a user known as "Totheark".

Jay's investigation leads him to meet with Tim and sends him to the abandoned house of another cast member, Brian Thomas (Brian Haight) where Jay finds the house trashed and finds several important things there such as a bullet casing, a pill bottle, a bunch of Alex's drawings, a water bottle in a closet door along with blanket, and a trail of blood upstairs that leads to the bathroom where Jay finds dry blood in the sink, and that the lights don't work. Throughout his visit, Jay hears many strange noises and briefly has a severe coughing fit. Jay decides to take the stuff he found. Totheark then responds to Jay with a video revealing they were the ones making the strange noises and were watching Jay the whole time. Jay then uploads footage of he, Alex, and Tim doing a scene together while The Operator was standing outside watching them through the window. Jay then notes that he is disturbed by the footage since he has no memory of it ever happening. Jay then decides to go back to Brian's house in case he missed something important, where he has his first encounter with a masked figure who tackles Jay before having a seizure and then Jay waking up the next day with the knife he brought with him gone.

Jay then uploads the next entry revealing that like Alex, he had been filming himself for a while but found nothing important and recorded it to a hard drive until he found footage of the masked figure watching him sleeping before Jay disappears for two hours. Totheark then responds to Jay with a video showing where Jay was during those past two hours. Jay then uploads the next entry where he analyzes all of the stuff he found during his first visit at Brian's house. He finds that the pill bottle is empty and has had its label torn off even though he didn't find it like that. He also finds that bullet casing he had is missing. Jay suspects that Totheark is behind this. Jay then looks through Alex's drawings and finds a message telling him to go to a tower. Jay visits a red tower to find a tape that shows Alex leaving Seth in an abandoned building when confronted with The Operator, with Alex subsequently determining that all of the cast and crew of Marble Hornets are "gone". Eventually, threats of stalking from Totheark causes Jay to flee his apartment, which is subsequently burned down. Jay receives video in the mail of Alex and his girlfriend, Amy Walters (Bethann Williams), being attacked by The Operator. As a result, Jay sets out to find Alex.

Season 2[]

Seven months later, an amnesiac Jay wakes up in a hotel room and meets with a similarly amnesiac young woman, Jessica Locke (Jessica May), who subsequently disappears. He unlocks a safe in his hotel room containing videos and a hard drive revealing the events that transpired during the previous seven months.

The footage shows that, during the missing seven months, Jay had a run-in with Alex, which saw them forming an alliance to find Amy. Jay also learned that the masked figure was Tim. Having been driven insane by the terror of The Operator and suspicious of Jay spying on him, Alex killed a stranger whose body was then taken by The Operator. The videos also reveal that a hooded figure has started following Jay, and that Jessica was Amy's friend and roommate, who, when contacted by Jay in his investigation, was unintentionally dragged into the case. When Alex attempted to kill Jay and Jessica for their involvement, the two escaped with the help of Tim and booked rooms at the aforementioned hotel, where an attack by the Operator caused the damage to their memories.

Season 3[]

With no leads in finding either Alex or Jessica, Jay enlists Tim under the pretense of finishing Marble Hornets. While Tim is initially furious upon learning about Jay's true motives, he decides to continue assisting him after the hooded figure steals his medication from his home, causing him to have a psychological breakdown. It is revealed that Tim does not remember anything he has done while in his "masked" state, that he was formerly committed to a mental hospital due to hallucinations that he fears were caused by The Operator, and that his new medication is able to block him from switching to his "masked" state. Tim and Jay's investigation leads them to repeatedly encounter The Operator, who subjects them both to physical and psychological torment. Jay begins to experience hallucinations as a result of this frequent exposure.

Tim is revealed to have hidden a video showing that he (in his masked state) and the hooded figure are the ones responsible for Jessica's disappearance and subsequent encounter with Alex and The Operator, with this revelation causing a breakdown in Jay and Tim's working relationship. Jay shows up at Tim's house with a knife and zip-ties, but he is overpowered and tied up by Tim, before later being freed by the hooded figure. Tim and Jay set off to find Alex separately. Jay is later shot and killed by Alex, leading Tim to take over the "Marble Hornets" channel. A confrontation between Tim and the hooded figure leads to the hooded figure falling to his death, after which Tim discovers that the hooded figure was Brian.

Tim, realizing that Alex intends to kill him, attempts to lure Alex to his home, with the consequence of the house being burned to the ground by Alex. During Tim's final confrontation with Alex, Alex reveals that he wants to kill anyone who has encountered The Operator, as he believes this will prevent the spread of The Operator's influence, and that he has already killed Amy, Sarah, and Seth in addition to Jay, knows that Brian is dead, and believes that Jessica is also dead. This means that Alex and Tim are the only remaining survivors of the recording of Marble Hornets, and that Tim is therefore Alex's last remaining target, after which he intends to kill himself. In the ensuing struggle, Tim finally manages to kill Alex by stabbing him multiple times in the throat. Alex's final words to Tim are that if he knows of any others who have come into contact with the Operator, then he should kill them and then kill himself as Alex had intended to do.

Four days later, Tim disposes of his mask and reunites with Jessica, who had survived the events of the hotel, despite Alex having thought otherwise. Tim had kept hidden before this point in order to protect her from any further danger. Tim's final encounter with Jessica ends ambiguously; Tim lapses into a coughing fit as the camera distorts and then cuts to black. When the footage resumes, Tim is alone, driving away and stopping at an intersection while sirens can be heard in the distance. With no indication whether or not Tim had acted on Alex's final words following the affect of The Operator and killed Jessica while planning his own suicide, or if the medication taken by both Tim and now Jessica had allowed them to overcome The Operator and survive, the final image of the series is a text card that simply states: "Everything is fine".

Characters[]

  • Troy Wagner as Jay Merrick: The person behind the "Marble Hornets" channel and the primary protagonist of the series. After rediscovering tapes given to him by former friend Alex Kralie, Jay begins uploading entries in an attempt to discover exactly what happened during the filming of Alex's student film Marble Hornets.[13] He is shot and mortally wounded by Alex in Entry #80.[14] His body is used to taunt Tim by The Operator before finally having his body removed from this dimension.[15]
  • Tim Sutton as Timothy Wright / The Masked Man: A former actor from the Marble Hornets student film, he is the primary protagonist of season 3 of the series. He is first in collaboration with Jay starting on Entry #59[16] and then as leader of the "Marble Hornets" channel following Jay's death in Entry #80[14] until the series' conclusion in Entry #87.[17] He makes several appearances in the Entries and on the Totheark channel wearing a mask; he was unveiled as the masked man in Entry #35.[18] The Masked Man makes his first appearance in Brian's house during Jay's investigations in Entry #18.[19] It is suggested that Tim is under the influence of The Operator during the times he wears his mask, as backed up in his monologue to Jay in Entry #59.[16] ) It is also suggested that Tim is the cause for The Operators appearance in everyone's lives,[20] due to his history with Operator induced hallucinations and memory loss in his youth[21] Tim is one of the two remaining alive characters, other than Jessica based on Entry #87, the last entry uploaded.[17]
  • Joseph DeLage as Alex Kralie: The director of the original Marble Hornets student film project and one of the series' primary antagonists. Alex used to attend the same school as Jay, but transferred to a different one following the wrap on filming of Marble Hornets. A large portion of Season 1 consists of tapes he filmed for personal use and for his uncompleted student film Marble Hornets. He is revealed to be a killer in Entry 86, having killed Sarah Reid, Seth Wilson and Amy Walters successfully.[22] He is stabbed and killed by Tim in Entry #86.[22]
  • Brian Haight as Brian Thomas / The Hooded Man: Brian was the lead actor in Alex Kralie's project and serves as the series' second antagonist. He appears throughout most of the Entries and on the Totheark channel as a hooded figure who works against Alex. He falls to his death during a confrontation with Tim in Entry #83.[15]
  • Mary Kathleen Bishop as Sarah Reid: An actress from Marble Hornets. She appears in front of the camera only once in Entry #9.[23] Alex confirms that he has killed her in Entry #86.[22]
  • Seth McCay as Seth Wilson: The cameraman for Alex's film, Marble Hornets. Alex leads him to The Operator at the abandoned building in Entry #22.[24] Alex confirms that he has killed him in Entry #86.[22] He is likely associated with the "Totheark" channel. As he was the cameraman and co-editor of Alex's short film, he may have owned several videos and sound recordings that Jay (and Alex) were not in possession of that appeared in videos on the channel.
  • Bethann Williams as Amy Walters: Alex's girlfriend. She appears in front of the camera only once in Entry #26, after Jay receives a package with a video tape of her and Alex being attacked by The Operator.[25] Alex confirms that he has killed her in Entry #86.[22]
  • Jessica May as Jessica Locke: A woman who Jay meets in the second season of the series. She is somehow connected to Jay as she has an adjoining room with him in the hotel, and consequently is somehow connected to Alex and The Operator. It is later revealed that she is the friend and roommate of Amy, hence her involvement. Alex believes her to be dead prior to his own death in Entry #86,[22] but she is revealed to still be alive in Entry #87.[17] Jessica is the main character of the Marble Hornets comic sequel, where she now works as a delivery driver in Rosswood Park while still haunted by her experiences with the Operator. She is one of only two human characters (along with Tim) that survived the events of the series.
  • Totheark: An anonymous figure who makes cryptic video responses to the Entries throughout the series. Their identity is never revealed throughout the series and it is entirely possible that it could be a group of people, as opposed to an individual. However, the most likely identity of the "Totheark" channel is Brian, as the channel's posts are antagonistic towards Alex, a position which Brian, in his guise as the hooded figure, also maintains throughout the series, in addition to which the "Totheark" channel ceased to release video responses following Brian's death in Entry #83.[15] Other potential candidates for the identity of the owner of the "Totheark" channel are Seth and Tim (in his masked state), or a combination of two or all three of them.
  • The Operator: An entity of unknown origin who begins appearing to Alex during the shooting of Marble Hornets, and one of the series' primary antagonists. When Jay personally investigates Alex's disappearance, he starts to encounter The Operator as well. It is later revealed that Tim was the first person associated with Marble Hornets to have come into contact with The Operator, and thus the Operator's contact with other characters may have occurred via him. The Operator displays the ability to teleport or otherwise move in a logically inconsistent manner, to move people in a similar way, and inflict permanent amnesiac states in people. While the Operator rarely physically threatens the cast at any point, its presence is shown to have a harmful effect on the human body and psyche, causing the various hallucinations and fugue states of the characters. Repeated exposure to the Operator is associated with a hard, painful coughing sickness. There is no indication as to the intent or goals of the Operator.

Shots of the exterior of a car are shown as someone drives, and text overlays this footage explaining the premise of the story from Jay's point of view. He explains that the following raw footage excerpts are from his college friend, Alex Kralie, who in 2006 was filming a student film entitled Marble Hornets. The cast and crew complained about his increasing stress and irritability. Eventually, towards the end of filming, Alex stopped production and left the film unfinished. Jay questioned Alex about what he was going to do with all the tapes to which he responded: "Burn them". Jay didn't want to see all that footage wasted so got Alex to give them to him with the latter saying to never mention them again. Alex moves away and Jay forgets about the tapes until finding them again recently. He decides to upload them to keep a permanent record of anything interesting he finds though notes that they are unnumbered and missing timestamps.
22"Entry #1"0:4820 June 2009 (2009-06-20)7,199,000
Jay has gone through several tapes already, finding nothing of interest or unusual until this one. The tape is missing its audio and was not taken on the set of Marble Hornets rather in Alex's house. Alex is filming, some visual tearing is present during the beginning, and looks outside through a window to see The Operator which notices him before Alex turns and runs away. The clip ends and Jay states that he will keep an eye out for any similar occurrences on the rest of the tapes.
33"Entry #2"1:3621 June 2009 (2009-06-21)4,064,000
The tape begins with Alex driving on a desolate road in the middle of the night explaining that he was taking his dog, Rocky, for a walk near the set of Marble Hornets when he noticed a really tall man, The Operator, standing in the middle of the road, not moving. The dog became very upset so Alex took him home and, with some time remaining on the tape, decided to drive back to where he saw the man to investigate. When he arrives cannot find him so assumes he has moved on though reaffirming how strange this was before the video abruptly ends. Jay notes that the man Alex described sounds similar to the one that appeared in Entry #1.
44"Entry #3"2:2923 June 2009 (2009-06-23)3,369,000
Jay explains that the majority of the tapes have nothing to do with Marble Hornets. The clips in this entry are from a dozen different tapes. Some visual tearing is present as Alex goes through some papers then films outside looking towards the woods. He is at a store buying more tapes for his camera and then is at home on the computer, turning his attention towards the window momentarily before changing tapes. The rest of the clips show Alex's increasing paranoia as he once again films out towards the woods, this time during the day, directly at himself while driving, and looking out his window somewhat frantically. Jay notes that while none of these tapes have anything substantial on them, it is clear that Alex wanted to film himself at all times.
55"Entry #4"0:4625 June 2009 (2009-06-25)3,082,000
The following video begins similar to first entry in that the audio has once again been removed. Alex is roaming around an empty playground in the middle of the night. A swing-set is moving on its own as well as other equipment. He comes across The Operator and runs a short distance away, turning only to make sure he isn't being followed. Jay notes that this entry and Entry #1 are the only two he has come across that have had the audio removed. He now suspects that the missing audio from both may have been removed by Alex himself.
66"Entry #5"3:3529 June 2009 (2009-06-29)2,736,000
Alex and Jay are out location scouting before the filming of Marble Hornets had begun. The first half takes place inside of a gazebo with loud audio distortion over the conversation between Alex and Jay. During the latter part of the video, that also contains heavy audio distortion, Jay notices a red tower that Alex believes to have once been a climbing wall or something used by the fire department possibly for training. Jay also notices instances of visual tearing similar to the ones he noticed in previous entries and it is possible he may have missed some in his initial viewings.
77"Entry #6"0:444 July 2009 (2009-07-04)2,950,000
Jay comes across a clip at the beginning of a new tape which he believes could possibly be a continuation of Entry #1 which was found at the end of another tape. In it, Alex is shown frantically running around his house and peering outside through his front windows. At first he doesn't see anything until he notices The Operator off to the left just outside the window and flees further into the house. The Operator then crosses in front of the window and the main door looking into the house as if it is searching for Alex. The video abruptly ends with no post video comments by Jay.
88"Entry #7"2:017 July 2009 (2009-07-07)2,596,000
Alex and Brian, Alex's friend and lead actor of Marble Hornets, are sitting in Alex's car, with an unknown girl sitting in the backseat, rehearsing some of Brian's lines for the film. More instances of visual tearing are present as Alex feeds Brian the lines of fellow cast member Tim who is not with them. Upon completing their rehearsal, Brian leans back in his seat and Alex notices through the car window The Operator standing off in the alleyway. Brian, unaware of The Operator's presence, asks if they are going to continue the rehearsal but a frightened Alex tells him they are done, turns the car on, and drives off in a hurry. Jay comments that someone was following Alex.
99"Entry #8"0:3712 July 2009 (2009-07-12)2,086,000
Jay begins by saying that he doesn't see any visual tearing on this tape but does explain that the audio seems to cut out towards the end. In the video, Alex is sitting at a circular table in his house drawing The Operator as well as writing various things such as "Sees Me", "Finds Me", "Speaks to Me" and even "Help". The audio then cuts out which seems to alarm Alex who grabs the camera and heads over to a lamp, presumably to turn off the lights, where the clip ends. Jay explains that the rest of the tape is too dark to see and the audio never comes back.
1010"Entry #9"3:3619 July 2009 (2009-07-19)2,056,000
A raw footage video shows that Alex is filming a scene for Marble Hornets involving two of his actors, Tim and Sarah, with the help of his cameraman Seth. Alex quickly becomes very irritable by Tim and Sarah's acting and the fact that Seth turned off the camera for a short time after Alex explained to him that he wanted it on at all times. Even after berating his cast and crew, they get back to filming. Jay suspects that whatever is following Alex is the reason that his attitude changed so drastically.

Jay finds another clip of The Operator and Alex. In this one, Alex is lying in bed. Visible on his wall are numerous black scribbles and drawings. Alex gets up, grabs the camera, runs to the window to check the street for The Operator, before returning to bed. Once he is in bed, a shadow can be seen moving across the drawings on the wall.

Jay returns to the house at night. This time, the house seems to be more of a mess than before, as there are shreds of unknown items on the floor, and the couch is overturned. The closet is seen to have been inhabited recently. When Jay continues to explore, he finds a doll with unusually long arms and legs. He turns around and there is a person sitting on the couch, now right side up, watching him. Jay calls out to see if it’s Alex, and the person sprints directly towards him. The person is wearing a mask. He attacks Jay and audio distortion occurs, before falling to the ground in a seizure. Jay walks over to him to try to take off the mask and the man shouts "No" and tries to grab Jay again. Jay starts running out of the house, before collapsing again onto the floor in a violent coughing fit. He later escapes, but wakes up the next day with no memory of the events after and the same audio distortion at the end of the video.

Jay runs through the items he found in the sixteenth entry, revealing that some items, the bullet casing and pills, are missing. He examines the drawings and finds "Sees Me" written on the front and "At the tower" written on the back. Unsure of what this means he decides to continue looking through the rest of Alex's tapes. He expresses that if something doesn't come out of them the trail might have gone cold.
3333"Entry #20"3:1815 December 2009 (2009-12-15)1,388,000
The last of Alex's tapes begins with an unknown cameraman filming Alex and Jay discussing Marble Hornets at Brian's house. Tim shows up looking visibly ill and then has a coughing fit before taking some medication that seems to stop it. They find some of Alex's drawings before Jay hallucinates that he sees The Operator in the field outside, before The Operator is actually seen in the field when neither Jay nor Tim are observing the camera. After returning to Tim's car to retrieve their flashlights, they inspect the basement, only to find that a period of time has passed and it is now nighttime. The Operator then appears behind them, forcing them to escape the house via climbing over a gate into the field. Tim takes Jay's camera and then loses Jay, who collapses in front of the house. Tim rushes to Jay's aid and faces The Operator. Once The Operator leaves the scene, Tim assists Jay in getting to the car and they then leave.

Tim brings Jay back into their room and informs him of recent developments - how Tim was able to stand up to The Operator in Entry #72, that he has given Jay some of his pills in the time since they escaped The Operator after realizing that they helped to counteract The Operator's effects, and that the hooded figure had uploaded entry #73 which showed Alex hiding in Tim's house. The pair decide to return to Tim's house due to the necessity of resolving the Alex situation and Tim's need for more pills, and have a meal of the food collected by Tim from the garage before they set out.

Jay confronts Tim about the tape but Tim denies having it, leading to a scuffle where Jay manages to retrieve the tape from Tim. Tim explains that he was going to show Jay the tape but later, as the contents would cause problems for their working relationship. Jay ignores Tim and leaves with the tape.

He sees The Operator several times, and has a severe fit whilst The Operator is standing over him. Tim comments on the fact that he never received Jay's voicemail and that he realizes it was the effects of The Operator that caused Jay to turn violent in Entry #77.

Tim returns to Benedict Hall to finish the conflict with Alex. He looks for Alex but Alex spots him first and tries to shoot him. After Tim falls through some floor boards, The Operator appears and starts teleporting Alex and Tim in the same way he teleported Brian and Tim during their fight. Alex explains that he has been killing the other Marble Hornets crew members to prevent those who have been in contact with The Operator from spreading his effects to anyone else, and that he has already killed Amy, Sarah, and Seth to accomplish this goal. To this end, once Alex kills Tim he intends to commit suicide. The confrontation ends with Tim fatally wounding Alex by stabbing him in the throat. Alex's final words to Tim are that if any of the others who had come into contact with The Operator are still alive, that Tim should kill them first and then kill himself to end the contagion of The Operator's influence.

The ultimate fates of Tim and Jessica are unknown, as The Operator's final attack may have been beaten by their medication.

Development and reception[]

Wagner and DeLage began working on the webseries after reading about the Slender Man mythos and because both liked the ease of creating a YouTube series.[26] The initial budget for the series was about $500, which the two used to create the first 26 episodes.[26] They decided against making a set time for each entry, as they both determined that the characters filming the entries would not consider the length of the episode and that the random entry times would help add to the realism. The entire series is edited with the software Sony Vegas Pro and Adobe Premiere.[27]

After its release the series' popularity grew,[28] drawing comparisons to Lonelygirl15 and iChannel.[29] In 2013, Dread Central named Marble Hornets one of their "Top 10 Horror Fan Films", noting that while it "isn’t technically a film" it still contained an "interwoven examination of the mythical Slender Man" and that they felt it was "what quality fanfare and found footage is really all about."[30] Early during the airing of season 1, the series received praise from Roger Ebert.[31]

In May 2014, the developers launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the DVD release of the third season. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with the original goal of $8000 in donations being exceeded by $76,271.[32] These funds went towards further projects, including a box set and new supplementary material in the form of scenes from Alex Kralie's Marble Hornets.

Film adaptation[]

In February 2013, Variety announced that plans were underway to produce a film adaptation of Marble Hornets.[33] They also announced that the script would be written by Ian Shorr, that James Moran would direct, and that Doug Jones would be portraying the Operator in the film.[34][35] In October of the same year, Wagner announced on his blog that the movie had finished filming and it would not be a continuation of the YouTube series but would be set within the same universe.[36]

The film, titled Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story, was released on video on demand on April 7, 2015, starring Doug Jones, Alexandra Breckenridge, and Alexandra Holden. The film opened in select theaters on May 15, 2015.[37] Critical reception for Always Watching was predominantly negative.[38]
