Marcus Armstrong (born 29 July 2000) is a New Zealand motor racing driver who competes in the Formula 2 Championship for DAMS. He is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

Career[]

Karting and lower formulae[]

Born in Christchurch, Armstrong began karting in 2010, winning major titles from 2011 onwards. While still karting, Armstrong graduated to single seaters in 2014 in the 2014–15 season of New Zealand Formula Ford Championship.

In 2016, Armstrong once again diversified his karting with stints in BRDC British Formula 3 and the two Formula Renault 2.0 series.

In November 2016, Armstrong was among five drivers invited to join the Ferrari Driver Academy and was confirmed as a member the following month.[1][2] That same month, he was confirmed to race in the 2017 Toyota Racing Series with M2 Competition, where he took three wins and finished fourth overall.[3]

In February 2017, it was announced Armstrong would race in both the ADAC F4 and Italian F4 championships with Prema Powerteam.[4] Claiming seven wins across both series, Armstrong finished runner-up in ADAC F4 and as 2017 Italian F4 champion.[5]

FIA Formula 3 Championship[]

For 2018, Armstrong returned to the Toyota Racing Series and continued his collaboration with Prema, graduating to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, alongside fellow Ferrari juniors Robert Shwartzman and Guanyu Zhou[6][7] where he scored a race win at the Norisring and claimed fifth in the championship.[8] At the season ending Macau Grand Prix he finished ninth.[9]

The following year, Armstrong reunited with both Prema and M2 Competition to contest the inaugural FIA Formula 3 Championship and the Toyota Racing Series with the respective teams.[10][11] In TRS, Armstrong took five victories, but missed out on the title in the season ending New Zealand Grand Prix to fellow countryman Liam Lawson.[12] In April 2019, Armstrong joined Nicolas Todt's All Road Management scheme.[13] In the championship, Armstrong scored two back-to-back sprint race wins at the Hungaroring and Spa-Francorchamps and a feature race victory at Sochi along with consistent podium and points finishes to finish as championship runner-up to teammate Robert Shwartzman.[14][15][16][17] In November 2019, Armstrong returned to contest the Macau Grand Prix, finishing eighth in the overall race having started seventeenth on the grid.[18]

Formula 2 Championship[]

On 28 November 2019, it was announced Armstrong would graduate to the FIA Formula 2 Championship with ART Grand Prix to partner F3 rival and Renault Sport Academy member Christian Lundgaard.[19] At the first two rounds in Spielberg, the Kiwi scored two podiums, with second place in the first race of his Formula 2 career.[20][21] Following that however, Armstrong went pointless until the feature race in Mugello, and fell out of the top ten in the standings. After four more points finishes he ended up 13th in the standings, his worst ever placing in a full-time series.[22]

For the 2021 season, Armstrong moved to DAMS to partner Roy Nissany.[23] Armstrong won his first Formula 2 race at round 7 of the championship, taking the victory on December 4, 2021 during the first sprint race at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.[24]
