Mariama Bawumia

Hajia Mariama Bawumia (15 September 1939 – 13 September 2021)[1] also known as Maame,[2] was a Ghanaian lady.

She lived in Kpasenkpe for her early education and later furthered her education in Wesley Girls Senior High School. [3] She was a princess from the Kpasenkpe Traditional Area.[4]

Early life and education[]

She was a native of Kpasenkpe in the West Mamprusi Municipality in the North East region. She attended Wesley Girls' Senior High School in Cape Coast.[5][6]

Personal life[]

She was married to Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia and they had five children.[7][8] She was the mother of Mahamudu Bawumia.[9][10][11] She was a Muslim.[12]

Death and burial[]

She died on 13 September 2021 in Accra after she was admitted for being ill.[13][14][15] She died at age of 81.[1] She was buried in Walewale on 13 September 2021.[16][17] She was buried closer to Mumuni Bawumia, her husband.[18][19] Sheikh Osman Sharubutu led the Janaza prayers with the help of Imams in the Northern region.[20]

On 16 September 2021, the third-day funeral prayer was done for her in Walewale. Islamic religious leaders, Imams and other government dignitaries came for the event.[21] The final funeral rites were scheduled on 24 October 2021.[22][23][24]

Tributes[]

In October, 2021, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II wrote a tribute to her.[25] Isaac Adongo supported in her final funeral rites.[26] Nana Akufo-Addo also wrote a tribute for her.[27] NPP also wrote a tribute for her.[28]
