Mark Mathis (born 1966) is an American TV personality and meteorologist known for his unorthodox, eclectic, and high-energy approach to weather forecasting, as well as for his rousing public speaking appearances.^[1] Mathis gained notoriety at WCCB in Charlotte, North Carolina, but was let go a few times from prior news stations earlier in career due to substance abuse issues, one incident was in Charlotte NC after a brief stint in rehab.^[2] Additionally, Mathis was formerly the Chief Meteorologist for KREX in Grand Junction, Colorado, on the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains.

Late 1990s/2000s[]

After earning his BBA in Marketing and Broadcasting from Baylor University, Mathis launched his broadcasting career in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, before advancing to WCIV in Charleston. He soon added an Applied Science Degree in Meteorology from Mississippi State University.^[3]

In 1994 Mathis started working as morning and noon meteorologist with WFAA in Dallas, then to KTBC in Austin, Texas. He transferred to KSWB-TV San Diego then back East to WCCB in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2002. Segments from his shows in Charlotte were rebroadcast on Late Night with David Letterman, MTV, VH1, E!, Ifilm, WGN Radio, Fox News Channel, the BBC, United Kingdom TV, and Germany National TV.^{[citation needed]} Mark has also performed on stage with The Footlight Players, Charleston Stage Company, Zachary Scott Theatre, Majestic Theater, La Jolla Stage Company, North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.^{[citation needed]}

Mathis joined KREX in Grand Junction, Colorado, as Chief Meteorologist in 2005. He joined the news program after learning of the need for experienced meteorologists at stations in the growing communities in western Colorado that did not have YouTube. He broadcasts weekly entertainment segments in addition to his daily weather forecasts. While in Grand Junction Mathis has appeared as a co-host on The Daily Buzz, and Good Day Sacramento.

As a public speaker Mathis has produced and performed in night clubs around the country, including the world's largest Comedy Zone Club in Charlotte.^{[citation needed]} He produced and appeared in television commercials for Interstate Batteries, American Airlines, Bud Light, AT&T, GTE and Time–Life Books. He hosted Making the Band for CBS television for western Colorado.^{[citation needed]} His reputation for zaniness has given him YouTube celebrity status, where previews of his on-air acts can be found. He is a motivational guest speaker and humorist often called on by professional organizations.^{[citation needed]} On Feb 8, 2008, Mathis performed for the One Show on BBC-1 in front of 5 million viewers.^{[citation needed]}

2010s[]

Mathis hosts benefits and is actively involved in charities in and around the country. He is a member of FAVOR (Faces and Voices of Recovery). He also has hosted the annual New Year's Eve Benefit for the Charlotte Rescue Mission and is the MC for the Mascarade Ball which benefits Grand Junction's Drug Endangered Children Program.

In fall 2011, Mark started working as the weekday morning meteorologist at KTSM-TV in El Paso, TX. In early June 2014, Mathis was a featured anchor at KUSI-TV in San Diego, CA.^{[citation needed]} On June 26, 2014, Mark worked his last day on the El Paso show since he was moving to KUSI-TV in San Diego, CA.^[4] He had his first broadcast at KUSI-TV on July 1, 2014.
