David Michael Baden-Powell, 4th Baron Baden-Powell (born 11 December 1940, Sinoia, Rhodesia) is a former accountant and insurance sales agent. He is the second son of Peter Baden-Powell, 2nd Baron Baden-Powell and Carine Boardman. He is the brother of Robert Crause Baden-Powell, 3rd Baron Baden-Powell. He is the grandson of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell and Olave Baden-Powell and great-grandson of Baden Powell. Upon the death of his childless brother Robert Baden-Powell, 3rd Baron Baden-Powell, on 28 December 2019, the peerage descended to Michael Baden-Powell

Baden-Powell is a great-nephew of Agnes Baden-Powell, Baden Baden-Powell, George Baden-Powell, and Warington Baden-Powell, and a great-grandson of Baden Powell.[1][2] On 20 August 1966, Baden-Powell married Joan Phillips Berryman.[3] They have three sons.

Early years[]

Following the death of Baden-Powell's grandfather, the 1st Baron Baden-Powell, his father Peter, who had been working in Southern Rhodesia since 1935, became the 2nd Baron Baden-Powell, and in 1949, when Michael was 8, the family moved back to England. He was educated at Pierrepont School, Frensham, England.[3] After leaving school, he worked for Fairey Aviation, until April 1965, when he migrated to Australia.

Family[]

On 20 August 1966, Baden-Powell married Joan Phillips Berryman, daughter of Horace William Berryman. They have three sons.[4]

Baden-Powell is a B-P Fellow, a member of The World Scout Foundation, The Baden-Powell Foundation of Australia, the Victorian Scout Foundation and is Patron of Scout Heritage of Victoria, the Australian Badge Club, the Australia Day Council Victorian Branch and is a member of the Baden-Powell Lodge, Lodge of Unity Peace and Concord (UK) two Masonic Lodges in the USA and an honorary member of Lodge Amalthea (Melbourne).[citation needed]

Scouting awards include 50 plus year Service Award (excluding his active service in the UK as a Sea Scouter), the order of the Green Forest from Malaysia, the Golden Pheasant and Medal of Merit Japan, Australia’s Silver Koala and Kangaroo for services to young people throughout the World.[citation needed]

The Girl Guides Association of Malaysia recognised Baden-Powell’s services by awarding him their Medal of Merit. Guides Australia awarded Baden-Powell their “Thanks Badge” during 2007. During 2007, Baden-Powell was awarded the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter’s Award by the Boy Scouts of America.[citation needed]

Philanthropy[]

In 2007, Michael Baden-Powell was instrumental in preserving a caravan trailer, nicknamed Eccles, which had been presented to his grandparents during the 3rd World Scout Jamboree in 1929.[citation needed] A Rolls-Royce car, nicknamed Jam Roll, which had been presented to his grandparents at the same time, was sold after his grandfather's death in 1941. The car and caravan were reunited at Gilwell Park for the 21st World Scout Jamboree in 2007. Paul Moniyhan, then The Scout Association's archivist, found the car and its owner prior to the Jamboree and made the original proposal to purchase it. Michael Baden-Powell, John Ineson, Tony Harvey and Stephen Hilditch formed the charitable company "B-P Jam Roll Ltd." which obtained a loan and purchased the car. Funds were raised to repay the loan.[5][6]

Baden-Powell was Master of Baden-Powell Lodge No. 488 in Melbourne, Victoria. This Masonic lodge, chartered in 1930, was the first to be named after his grandfather, who donated the Volume of Sacred Law in 1931. The lodge was founded by Scouters and has close links to Scouting. He remains an active member.[7][8][9]

During the Scouting 2007 Centenary, Baden-Powell addressed Freemasons and Scouts, and non-Masonic Scouters, at meetings of Pioneer Lodge in the Derbyshire and Walesby Forest Lodge in the Nottinghamshire (both in United Grand Lodge of England, and also both lodge members of the Kindred Lodges Association).[10]

Following a family tradition, Baden-Powell is a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Mercers.[citation needed]
