Luis Miguel Gerónimo Barbosa Huerta (born 30 September 1959) is a Mexican politician affiliated with MORENA[2] and current Governor of Puebla. He was a senator of the LXII and LXIII Legislatures of the Mexican Congress, and he also served as a federal deputy between 2000 and 2003.[3] He was a candidate for the governorship of Puebla for the coalition Juntos Haremos Historia - formed by Morena, the Labor Party (PT) and the Social Encounter Party (PES) - for the state elections of 2018 and the extraordinary elections of 2019.[4]
Controversies[]
After a helicopter crash resulted in the death of Martha Érika Alonso Hidalgo, a politician for PAN who was the first female governor of Puebla, her husband, her predecessor and the two pilots, Miguel Barbosa responded saying that "God punished them" for allegedly stealing the election from him.[5]
On January 8, 2020, Arias Consultores released a poll that describes the best and worst governors. Miguel Barbosa Huerta was declared the worst.[6]
On March 24, 2020, Governor Barbosa claimed that only the wealthy were at risk of COVID-19, since the poor are immune.[7]
He illegally claimed to be a lawyer for over 30 years, only officially obtaining his degree a few months before becoming governor.[8]
