NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament bids by school and conference
This is a list of NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament bids by school (divided by their current conference affiliation). Schools whose names are listed in the last table are no longer in NCAA Division I Men's Basketball, and can no longer be included in the tournament.
The years listed are the last tournament year a school has reached a certain round of the NCAA Tournament. Because earlier tournaments took place with fewer teams, the years listed are only those in which the school advanced (or received a bye) from an earlier round. For instance, no team is judged to have reached the Elite 8 until the 1951 Tournament because the NCAA tournament included only eight teams from the first tournament in 1939 through 1950. Similarly, no team is judged to have reached the Sweet 16 until the 1953 Tournament because the tournament included 16 or fewer teams before 1953.
Some schools have NCAA tournament appearances under previous names. For example, UTEP was known as Texas Western when it won its NCAA title in 1966.
Additional notes:
- Opening round wins count as a win in the NCAA tournament.
- Appearances by a school that has forfeited its appearances after the fact are still shown here.
- Teams listed as competing in the 2021 Tournament received an automatic or at-large bid.
- The tournament bids by conference total is based on the number of tournament appearances by current members of the conference; not on the actual number of appearances by a conference irrespective of changes in membership. While the bids by conference depicted amount is a good reflection on historic performance by the current membership, the amount does not accurately depict a conference's historical performance in the tournament.
- Final Four teams in bold.
- The 2020 Tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The lists are updated through the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament, the most recently held to date. They also reflect the following changes for the 2021–22 and 2022–23 seasons:
- 2021–22
- Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State left the Ohio Valley Conference for the ASUN Conference.[1][2]
- Hartford announced the gradual downgrade of its athletic program to Division III.[3]
- One school started a transition from Division III, with St. Thomas joining the Summit League, after obtaining a waiver of rules that would otherwise have disallowed such a transition.[4]
- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference lost three members: Bethune–Cookman and Florida A&M to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, and North Carolina A&T to the Big South Conference.[5][6]
- The Southland Conference expelled five members: Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston, and Stephen F. Austin joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and Central Arkansas moved to the ASUN.[2][7]
- 2022–23
- California Baptist and North Alabama will be eligible for this tournament if they qualify.[8][9]
- Dixie State will change its institutional name to Utah Tech.[10]
- Hartford is to play its final Division I season.[3]
- Texas A&M–Commerce is to join the Southland Conference pending NCAA approval of its transition from Division II.[11]
- The Colonial Athletic Association will lose a member and gain four: James Madison to the Sun Belt Conference in sports other than field hockey, lacrosse, and men's soccer, Hampton and, other than football, North Carolina A&T from the Big South, Monmouth from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and Stony Brook from the America East Conference.[12][13]
- The Missouri Valley Conference will also lose a member and gain another: Loyola Chicago to the Atlantic 10 Conference and the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) from the Horizon League.[14][15]
- The Ohio Valley will lose three members and gain the same number: Austin Peay to the ASUN, Belmont and Murray State to the Missouri Valley, and Little Rock from the Sun Belt, along with Lindenwood and Southern Indiana from Division II, also pending NCAA approval of their transitions to Division I.[16][17][18][19][20]
- The Sun Belt is likely to gain Marshall and Southern Miss, and regain Old Dominion, from Conference USA (C-USA) earlier instead of 2023–24.[21]
- The WAC will also lose three members and gain also the same number: Chicago State to an unnamed conference, Incarnate Word from Southland, New Mexico State and Sam Houston to C-USA, Southern Utah from the Big Sky Conference, and UT Arlington, rejoining from the Sun Belt.[22][23][24]
Bids by conference[]
Note that these figures represent the total bids received by each current member of the conference, and does not necessarily reflect the number of years that a conference was represented in the tournament. All information is current through the 2020–21 season.
