Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council is the local governing body for Neath Port Talbot, Wales, UK. Since its creation in 1996 it has been controlled by the Labour Party.

Leadership[]

On 12 May 2017, Councillor Robert Jones become leader of the council, taking over from previous leader Councillor Ali Thomas.[2] The deputy leader is Councillor Ted Latham.

On 6 March 2021, Councillor Robert Jones stood down from his role as leader of the council, pending an investigation. He confirmed his intention to return to the role following the completion of the said investigation. It was confirmed that the deputy leader, Councillor Ted Latham, would replace Councillor Jones on an interim basis. Councillor Leanne Jones was confirmed as the interim deputy leader.

Councillor Ali Thomas had succeeded Cllr Derek Vaughan as leader when Vaughan became a Member of the European Parliament in May 2009.

Elections take place every five years, electing sixty-four councillors. The last election was 4 May 2017.[3]

Neath Port Talbot is a Labour stronghold. Labour have been in power in Neath Port Talbot since 1996.[6]

Mayoralty[]

On 17 March 2021, Councillor John Warman was appointed the mayor of Neath Port Talbot.

The deputy mayor for 2021-22 is Councillor Del Morgan.

Council premises[]

Office complexes for the council are located at the

  • New Neath Civic Centre,
  • Port Talbot Civic Centre, and
  • The Quays in Baglan Bay.
