Necrophage

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fungi are the primary decomposers in most environments, illustrated here Mycena interrupta.

Necrophages are organisms that obtain nutrients by consuming decomposing dead animal biomass.[1] The term derives from Greek nekros, meaning 'dead', and phagein, meaning 'to eat'.

In popular culture[]

  • The Witcher series, where 'necrophages' is a broad group of monsters that feed on corpses.
  • Endless Legend, featuring the Necrophage faction, an insectoid species that both feed on corpses and inject living creatures with eggs that hatch upon death, consuming the corpse in the process.
  • Stellaris has an expansion which allows the player to play as alien undead with the necrophage trait.
