The New Tempe Arena is a proposed sports facility to be constructed in Tempe, Arizona. If approved by Tempe City Council, it would serve as home arena for the Arizona Coyotes of the NHL. The general concept includes $1.7B Tempe Entertainment District development which would include hotels, retail, apartments and a theater.[1]

Design[]

After several years of negotiation between City of Tempe Economic Development Manager, Maria Laughner and Arizona Coyotes management, the proposed arena would be located on a parcel of city owned land adjacent to the Salt River. The proposed arena would have a capacity of 16,000. The Arizona Coyotes are seeking city sales tax revenues to help pay for $200 million in additional costs, including infrastructure work. [2][3]

Concerns[]

As the arena's location is close to Phoenix Sky Harbor, the airport has concerns that the new arena will cause a risk for inbound and outbound aircraft. A similar issue hit the Arizona Cardinals in 2001 when they were trying to build a stadium at Rio Salado. This later resulted in them moving to Glendale.
