O Hayat Benim (English title: That is my life) is a Turkish television drama series, originally broadcast on FOX from 2014 to 2017.[1] The series follows Bahar who was snatched from her mother's arms (Hasret) at birth by her grandfather and is put to live with his servants until, many years later, the old man reveals her existence to her millionaire birthfather (Mehmet). As the birthfather comes to collect his daughter, the adoptive mother (Nuran) of Bahar uses her biological daughter Ifsun in her stead to gain wealth for her poor family. Halfway throughout the series, the lie is revealed, but problems deepen between the two sisters and those whose lives revolve around them.

Plot[]

First act

Bahar is a young girl who lives in the working class area of Istanbul with her mother Nuran, her father Ilyas, and her sister Efsun. Due to her family's bad financial situation, Bahar must drop out of school and work in a pastry shop to earn money. She is a kind, optimistic and valuable girl unlike her sister Efsun, who is selfish, loquacious and narcissistic, although still possessing a hidden compassion. Bahar is actually adopted. She is the daughter of Mehmet Emir Atahan, a rich and successful businessman. It is a secret for many people, and for Bahar.

Once upon a time, her real grandfather, Yusuf, did not want his daughter, Hasret, to marry Mehmet Emir. He separated them and hid her pregnancy from Mehmet Emir. During childbirth, Hasret, Bahar's mother, was told that Bahar died when really she was taken away from her. Bahar's biological grandfather, Yusuf, lied to Mehmet Emir and told him that Hasret had committed suicide, but she was alive. Yusuf gave Bahar to Ilyas, an honorable worker of his, whom he asked to raise Bahar as if she were his own daughter. Years later, when Yusuf learned that he was dying, his last wish was to see his granddaughter. After many years, Yusuf visits Mehmet Emir and tells him he has a daughter. Meanwhile, Yusuf is accidentally killed after a fall after Nuran pushes him. Afraid of being arrested, Nuran and Ilyas decide to bury the body in the backyard, without anyone noticing. Although suspicions rise, with Sakina and Ismail suspecting.

Bahar's adoptive parents Nuran and Ilyas do not tell her the truth about who she is, and when the Atahan family come in search of Bahar, Nuran sends her other daughter Efsun in place of Bahar to improve the life of her biological child. Efsun snips Bahar's hair to prove that she is Mehmet's daughter through a DNA test, and then begins to live the prestigious life that belongs to Bahar. Mehmet's sister, Hülya abhors Efsun and problems ensue between the two. The couple then live in Mehmet's secondary suite near the palace through Efsun's support. Hasret returns to Mehmet and Fulya, Mehmet's current wife, is disgruntled. Hasret finally sees her "daughter" Ifsun, although she first lays her eyes on Bahar due to their resemblance, thinking that she is her daughter.

Nuran schemes against Bahar and her lover Ateş, taking Ateş to Efsun, falsely impregnating her. On the day of Efsun and Ateş' wedding, Ateş proves that he did not impregnate Efsun and reveals the plot of Nuran to the whole family. Mehmet furiously expels them from the palace. Nuran spots Hulya's mother Edibe unconscious in a chair, after suffering from a stroke. Later as Edibe recovers, Hulya learns that Edibe planned the deaths of Ateş's parents. To gain leniency and sympathy from the law and people alike, Edibe pretends to be mute (with only Hulya knowing), although Ifun suspects that she's faking it. Asim leaves his wife Hulya for Seçil, Sakine's daughter (who are Nuran's neighbours), shattering Hulya.

Ifsun, Nuran, Ilyas and Sakina are jailed for the accidental death of a Mehmet estate servant, but video surveillance shows that they were wrongly convicted and thus were released. Later on, Bahar and Ateş begin exchanging vows until they are interrupted by a jealous Ifsun, who falsely says that she slept with Ateş, enraging Bahar. The marriage is cancelled and Bahar cuts Ateş off for weeks. Bahar tries to commit suicide in the bathroom through carbon monoxide poisoning, but is rescued by Ifsun. Hulya's mother Edibe commits suicide in prison by overdosing on pills. Hulya is inconsolable and blames Ateş for her death, as he revengefully threw her in jail since she orchestrated his parents' assassination. Ilyas demands Nuran to divorce because she becomes unreasonable and unbalanced. She is killed in a fiery bus accident, whilst traveling to Bursa. Sultan, Ifsun's maternal aunt, was the person who delivers the news of Nuran's death. She becomes very close to Ifsun, taking her mother's role in all affairs, where they eventually confide in one another.

Ifsun is still inconsolable and therefore becomes ruthless after her mother's death. She estranges Bahar and blames her for Nuran's death, where she attempts to shoot her, though the bullet hits Ismail, injuring him. Ismail and Ifsun began dating at this point. Bahar then travels to Cyprus with Ateş to escape and Ifsun regrets what she did. A few days later, Ifsun gets infected with pneumonia where her lungs fail and is in a critical condition. Hasret becomes sorrowful over this because she does not want to lose her daughter again, and Ismail becomes afflicted as well. Bahar is devastated by the news, returning to her sister, who eventually awakens. A week later, Efsun's kidney fails, but a donor is quickly found (though Hulya had initially bribed the conferrer to halt the donation). Mehmet then transfers his estate through coercion to Hulya to save Ifsun's life, after she threatens him. Mehmet is furious when he learns about the bribe. Problem ensues between him and Hulya, where she insists that Efsun is a conniving person, and should not be endorsed, but to no avail.

Because Hulya is combative with Ifsun, Sultan uses sneaky tactics to drive her insane, and yet nobody believes Hulya that Sultan and Ifsun are bringing this madness upon her. Hulya strangles her daughter Müge in her sleep, thinking it was Ifsun. The family cannot stand Hulya's pernicious outbreaks, so she is admitted in a mental asylum, though she runs away a few days later. With the help of Mucella, Salih transfers Yusuf's body to a yard at Mehmet's mansion. Mehmet is arrested because the body is found in his mansion's yard, with Hulya being the accomplice. Bahar is held captive by Salih because she wants to reveal the truth about Yusuf's death. After escaping from her captivity, Bahar arrives at the court to tell the truth, but Ifsun herself first reveals the truth about Yusuf's death in the courtroom. Mehmet and Hulya therefore become acquitted. Hasret becomes infuriated with Ifsun for hiding a dark and disturbing truth about her deceased father for this long. Hulya reinstates Mehmet's financial estate as a gesture of her love towards her brother.

Second act

Just after Ilyas's house is burnt down (perpetrated by Hulya), Ateş discovers that Bahar is the true daughter of Mehmet and Hasret after reading a letter from Nuran (at Yusuf's home in Mersin) that included Bahar's photos as she is growing up. He learned that Ifsun stole Bahar's life for her own greedy benefits, as instigated by Nuran. Sultan, Ilyas, Mucella and Salih are Ifsun's accomplices. Ateş reveals the truth to Bahar at the site of her burnt home. Initially, she was in disbelief, but quickly and begrudgingly accepts the fact. An anguished Bahar heads to the Mehmet mansion, where a house party is taking place, to call out Ifsun for her unforgivable lie. Ifsun is guilt-ridden and speechless for being exposed in front of the guests. Hasret is skeptic of the verity at first, but then becomes delirious after accepting the truth. Mehmet becomes vengeful and despises Ifsun's family. Hulya expels Ifsun and her accompanying family from the mansion's garden, boasting how she was right about them.

Ilyas attempts to hang himself due to guilt, but is saved by Bahar and his neighbours. Bahar still doesn't forgive him. He undergoes surgery due to his broken neck with money funding. Zeynep makes an appearance, alongside her mother Ganimet and extended family. Hulya's son Arda and Zeynep begin having a relationship, albeit an unstable one. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Ateş's ex-girlfriend has returned from Switzerland and, unbeknownst to Ateş, that she has a 7 year old son with him. Bahar presses charges against Ifsun, who is later arrested and suffers from abuse in jail (perpetrated by Hulya). Ifsun and Sultan believe that Bahar is scheming her abuse. Bahar loses trust and faith in everybody at this point, pushing away her biological parents as well. Shortly after, Ifsun is released from jail by a lawyer. She violently taunts Bahar as an act of retaliation. Bahar slowly recovers and moves into the Mehmet estate in spite of Ifsun. Hasret still feels maternally estranged from Bahar.

Ifsun, Sultan and Salih propose a strategical plan to obtain money from Arda by having him "kill" someone. That someone is hired to be part of the ruse and is supposed to protect Ifsun after Arda confronts her for scratching his car. However, the artifice goes awry after Arda accidentally kills him (as the man was trying to "save" Ifsun). Salih films the incident from a window with Sultan. After learning of the man's death, the trio threaten to inform the authorities on Arda, unless he pays them a lot of money. Indeed, Arda pays them. Later, they coerce Arda to marry Ifsun, because she is desperate to reside in the Atahan mansion and wants to rival Bahar, who are now estranged. He does so reluctantly and they marry in Paris. Bahar finally accepts Mehmet and Hasret as her parents.

The Atahan family notices the mass deduction of Mehmet's funds, after Arda inherits his uncle's estate. Furious, Hulya suspects that he's married to Zeynep, but then learns Ifsun is his wife to her great shock. The trio reveal the truth to Hulya about Arda killing someone to keep her under their leash. Ateş suspects the foul play in this. Ilyas reports Sultan and Salih to the police after suspecting the huge of money they have been collecting is stolen, but are released after Arda begrudgingly tells the authorities he gave them the money as gift. Mehmet is diagnosed with brain cancer, after having many nosebleeds. Bahar becomes the holder of her father's estate and implores her father to get treatment, in which he does for her sake. Arda and Ifsun have a wedding party, although he and his mother are still discomfited. Zeynep watches the party in great woe from a distance, who later gets engaged to Jamal in spite of Arda. Meanwhile, Ismail is shot and injured in a shootout, devastating Ifsun.

All household items of the Mehmet estate are sold by Bahar in spite of Ifsun, though Ifsun later refurbishes the mansion with her stolen saved money. Meanwhile, the body of the man that Arda accidentally killed is found, with news reaching his widow mother. In the meantime, Jamal and Zeynep get married, even though Arda still has feelings for her. Hulya's daughter Müge has had enough of the lies and coverups, especially with Bahar for selling all of her grandmother's (Edibe) possessions. Müge flees from the mansion and gets in a car accident, alongside Ifsun, who was sitting with her. The family is thankful for Ifsun, who rescued Müge. Despite this, Bahar is still vindictive towards Ifsun. Out of spite, Ifsun reveals the fact that Bahar was quiet all this time when Yusuf's body was hidden. Hulya banishes Bahar from the mansion after learning about this and Mehmet distances himself from Bahar. Meanwhile, Sultan's earring is discovered by Ismail's partner Cengiz at the gravesite of Arda's victim, where they immediately suspect Salih and Sultan. After a series of unfortunate events, Ateş leaves to Switzerland and plans to marry Arzu, grieving Bahar. Ifsun learns that it was Hulya who paid inmates to beat her in prison, not Bahar. Ifsun goes to inform Bahar about this at Ateş's home, where it accidentally ignites. She and Hasret rescue Bahar, with the three finally ending up somewhat amicable. Mehmet and Bahar learn from Ifsun that it was Hulya who was behind Ifsun's prison torment.

Third act

As time passes and harmony sets in for the characters, Bahar marries Ateş. Bahar and Ifsun come to an agreement and live a happy life. While Efsun gets pregnant with Arda, Bahar becomes pregnant with Ateş. Another hostile party, Kenan, infiltrates Mehmet's family using Hülya as his love interest, then marries her. He is the serial killer who killed Ateş' parents when he was a child, so Ateş seeks revenge. When Kenan is about to kill Ateş, Bahar shoots and wounds him. Bahar is unknown to officials and is a fugitive. While Efsun tries to escape her, Bahar inadvertently pushes Efsun in front of an oncoming car, killing her fetus. Efsun seeks revenge on Bahar. The third season ends when Bahar gives birth and Efsun steals the baby (named Nuran) from intensive care nursery, and a man, presumably dispatched by Kenan, splits chemical on Bahar's face.

The fourth season is set 5 years later. Bahar's daughter is 5 years old living with her faux mother and father, Efsun and Arda, respectively. Later on, Bahar and Ateş find out that Nuran is their daughter. In the show's climactic finale, a brokenhearted and psychotic Zeynep returns to Arda in the mansion, shooting him dead. Hulya is driven mad by grief. Efsun leaves the mansion and walks away to her home with heavy regret.
