Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College (OLOPS College or simply OLOPSC) is a private, non-sectarian, educational institution located in Concepcion Uno, Marikina, Philippines, that offers preschool, basic and higher education. It was founded by Dionisio Salvador Sr. in 1978. There are approximately 5,000 students enrolled for the school year.[specify]

History[]

Early History (1970s)[]

OLOPSC was founded on February 18, 1978 by Dionisio Alonzo Salvador, Sr., a graduate student from Far Eastern University with a course in Architecture. It started as a day-care center under a single roof in a pelota court at Bayan-Bayanan Avenue in Concepcion, Marikina with at least 50 pupils. In 1978, the Our Lady of Perpetual Succor School was established.[1] The increasing number of enrollees in the succeeding years required the transfer of the school site to rented lots along Bayan-Bayanan Avenue where additional school buildings were constructed.[1]

1980s–1990s[]

In 1985, the school was operating under full government recognition for the all three of these courses: the Preschool. Grade School and High School. In 1986, OLOPSS moved to its present location at Gen. Ordoñez Street, in Concepcion, Marikina with a 3.5-hectare lot. It is on this site where it stands today as a comfortable home to its students and its employees.[1] In 1995, OLOPSS changed its name to Our Lady of Perpetual Succor College (OLOPSC) when the college department was opened. This has now attained government recognition and on its ways to accreditation. In the years 1996 and 1997, the present school's chapel was now finished.[1] In the summer of 1999, the OLOPSCians saw the rising of the new two-storey building for the grades 1 and 2.[1]

Recent history (2003-present)[]

The succeeding school years saw the switching of classrooms to air-conditioning units as its serves as one of the Silver Jubilee gifts to the school community. Also included were the construction of the new two-story building for the preschool, the freezing of tuition fees for a year, the reformulation of the school's vision and mission, revision of the student handbook in all departments, and a number of policies to enhance employee benefits.[1]

The Death of Dionisio A. Salvador[]

On August 11, 2005, Dionisio A. Salvador, the founder of the school and its president for 28 years died. His death was due to multiple organ failure that was triggered by his heart condition. The OLOPSC community grieved his death with its members joining the his family in giving their goodbyes to him. His remains are interred in the school's chapel.

On September 17, 2006, as a gift for her 65th birthday, Carmen C. Salvador, the former school's executive vice president for 28 years, was installed as the new president of the college succeeding her husband.

Tropical Storm Ketsana (2009)[]

On September 26, 2009, OLOPS College suffered greatly due to what was then Tropical Storm Ketsana (Ondoy). The campus experienced knee-high floods due to the rains brought by the cyclone. Several students were stranded, which resulted in the administration allowing the students to stay within the campus until the flood subsided. Many students stayed inside the school for numerous hours—even until the next day, when parents were already capable to pick up their children.[2]

2009 H1H1 Pandemic and COVID-19 Pandemic[]

During the A(H1N1) Pandemic, OLOPSC introduced thermal scanning in all entrances of the campus.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the campus received a “Very Good” rating for their COVID-19 prevention safety protocols during the inspection conducted by the Philippine National Police on July 11, 2020.[3] One of their safety protocols was the implementation of non-contact infrared temperature scanners in order for stakeholders to have less contact with OLOPSCian staff.[4] School transactions, such as getting of belongings that were left prior to the pandemic, as well as claiming of year-end awards and diplomas were done via drive thru.[5]

Awards, government recognitions and citations[]

OLOPSC has reaped honors in academic, art and literary–musical competitions and has graduated numbers of students, many of them gaining admission in premiere colleges and universities where they graduated with honors and citations, with many of them topping board exams in their fields.[1]

The OLOPS College campus is in Marikina. Accessible from the campus are leisure and recreational areas such as the DC Arcadia (owned by OLOPSC), Marikina branch of Ayala Malls, and nearby convenience stores & fastfood restaurants such as 7-Eleven, Jollibee, and Greenwich.

A student council organization for each department governs the events and affairs of the clubs in their respective levels. The following are the student councils established in OLOPSC:

  • Grade School Pupils Organization (GSPO) - manages the clubs in the grade school department
  • High School Students Organization (HSSO) - governs the clubs in the junior and senior high school levels; was separated into two independent student-governing bodies by A.Y. 2019-2020:
    • Junior High School Students Organization (JHSSO) - governs the clubs and oversees departmental-wide activities in the junior high school department
    • Senior High School Student Council (termed as the "Kapulungan") - governs the student organizations and facilitates departmental-wide activities in the senior high school department
  • OLOPS College Student Council (OCSC) - handles the student organizations in the college department

Alumni[]

Society of OLOPSC High School Alumni (SOHA)[]

The Society of OLOPSC High School Alumni is the official alumni organization of the OLOPSC High School Department. Alumni who graduated from the said department automatically becomes a member of the Alumni Society. Approximately 16,000 alumni members are currently with the organization. There are proposals for the society to merge with the other alumni organizations from the other departments of the institution. These proposals were being acted upon as of this moment.[when?]

Notable off-campus activities and achievements[]

2010 - 2014[]

  • The OLOPSC varsity teams, which go by their collective name of OLOPSC Phoenix were able and are continuing to bag numerous awards and titles in various sports competitions, such as in badminton, basketball, table tennis, swimming, and volleyball among others. Notably among these awards is the grade school volleyball team being champions at the 2010 Milo Little Olympics held at Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao,[10] and the Basketball Varsity Team reaching the finals of the 2010 MARIPRISAA competition.
  • The OLOPSC Pep Squad was also formed to represent the cheering crowd of OLOPSCians during the school's competitions inside and outside its premises. Notably at the 2011 Milo Little Olympics, the team won 2nd Runner Up at one of its Cheerdance Competitions.
  • The class of Grade 10 - Assumption of Mary (A.Y. 2013-2014), coached by their Filipino teacher Ms. Jevilyn B. Candelario, emerged as the champion in the UP SPECA Speech Cup last November 30, 2013 at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Mary Claire Aquino, a student from the aforementioned section, also won 2nd Place in the Oral Interpretation of the same contest.[11]

2015 - 2019[]

  • In 2016, selected students from Grade 9 - Amazing Grace (A.Y. 2015-2016) were able to win 2nd place and a cash prize of Php 100,000.00 at the "Para sa Bata: Music Video Face-off" contest held by Isang Nayon and Rex Bookstore.[12]
  • In 2019, selected student-journalists from the grade school and junior high school departments were able to bag various awards at the 21st Division Schools Press Conference and Contest. Some of the winners from the division level were selected again to compete at the contest's regional level.[13]
