A native of Uíbh Ráthach, County Kerry, Ó hÉigeartaigh emigrated to Springfield, Massachusetts, as a child. He commemorated the drowning of his six-year-old son with the poem Ochón! a Dhonncha ("My Sorrow, Donnchadh"), which was published around 1906 in An Claidheamh Soluis, and later translated by Padraig Pearse.
