1 | 1 | "Milwaukee, America" | Steven Conrad | Story by : Steven Conrad and Gil Bellows Teleplay by : Steven Conrad | November 3, 2015
In 2012, the president of Iran dies in a helicopter crash, leaving the position up to two candidates—one of whom wants to nuke Israel. Disturbed from intense psychological torture under Iranian capture, skilled CIA agent John Tavner is sent to get a job at the McMillan piping firm in Milwaukee. He is instructed to make it onto the travel team and deliver a bag of money in Luxembourg to help influence the election. To secure a position on the travel team, John shoves competitor Steven Tchoo in front of a truck. To pass a drug test, John solicits urine from McMillan worker Dennis McClaren. Arriving in Luxembourg, John's bag of money is stolen by airport worker Edgar Barros. On his way to get it back, John stabs a curious Dennis in the leg to deter him. Barros' brothers attack him when he tries to get the bag, but he escapes with it by stabbing one to death. His attaché brother, Edward, distracts the police by claiming he was mugged. John ends up giving the money to a double-agent after receiving a threatening note. Back in Milwaukee, John's father, Tom, informs him that he needs to return to Luxembourg to intercept the bag from being transferred to the anti-Israel candidate.
2 | 2 | "C-19" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad | February 23, 2017
John is told that an Iranian physicist's wife is coming to pick up the money. McMillan security guard Jack Birdbath revealed he heard John getting urine from Dennis and threatens to expose his treachery. Homicide detective Agathe Albans is investigating the Barros brother’s death in tandem with Dennis' stabbing and Edward's "mugging." Tom uses his governmental connections to stall her from coming to America. Birdbath, an ex-cop who was fired for shooting a child, wants John to place a box inside his evidence file at the local police station. He informs John that the building is guarded by officers with various hindrances, such as a man with one leg and a man with PTSD. John steals the officer's prosthetic leg and the other's therapy dog, easily infiltrating the building. John's boss, Leslie Claret, is fed up with John parking in his company spot and threatens to fire him if he does it again. While John drives to work, Leslie waits to see if he parks in his spot. Before John can make it to the parking lot, he almost hits Agathe, revealing she has made it to America. She locks eyes with him.
3 | 3 | "McMillan Man" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad | February 23, 2017
Earlier, Agathe rummaged through hotel trash and found paper with Barros' address on it, and, using that and the fact that his and Dennis' knife wounds match, is able to get to America. In the present, just before John parks in Leslie's spot, he seems to come to himself and moves. John fails an important meeting with the Denon corporation, to the ire of Leslie, who removes him from the travel team. While Agathe interviews Dennis, John takes his place at the company duck hunt and ends up getting paired with division leader Lawrence La Croix. He drunkenly confesses to John that he can never hit any ducks and is attracted to an employee. John shoots down a couple of ducks and lets Lawrence say he shot them in an attempt to impress the employee. In return, John is allowed to remain on the team. John tells Dennis he needs him to smuggle money through the airport on the next trip. John turns out to have kept the therapy dog he stole, but he is chastised by a waitress at the bar near the company, being told that therapy dogs are incredibly important to their owners. John considers keeping him, but ultimately decides to let him go home.
4 | 4 | "John's To-Do List 5/18/12" | Steven Conrad | Bruce Terris | February 23, 2017
Leslie increases John's workload, looking for an excuse to fire him. Edward is interviewed about his "mugging" and Agathe finds him suspicious. She sends one of her colleagues to tail him. Dennis smuggles the money into Luxembourg through a travel pillow. On a bus, John and Dennis plan out his day on John's BlackBerry phone. John captures Edgar Barros from the airport, binds him with tape, and shoves him into his hiking backpack. He plans to hand Barros off to Edward, but Edward realizes he is being tailed and tells John he cannot take the bag. John has plans to steal back the money from Mikham Candahar, the man he gave the money to, but he misses the time when Mikham is out of his hotel room. John tracks Mikham down, but Mikham gets the jump on him and throws John down multiple flights of stairs (with Barros still in the bag on his back) before escaping. John searches his room and steals the room safe. John is forced to abort his plans to confront the Barros brothers and meet the Denon team for drinks. As he walks to the meeting he is supposed to attend, both Edward and Dennis catch up to him and take Barros off his hands. John makes his meeting just in time and improvises a piping speech, which he manages to pull off. John receives a note from Agathe for a request for interview. Realizing that he cannot ignore her any longer, John begins tailing her. Edward and Dennis open the safe by throwing it out a window. Inside, they find a passport for a Japanese woman, a drifter named Numi who has been seen collecting random junk around town. As John continues to follow Agathe, he stops and collapses from exhaustion.
5 | 5 | "Un Monsieur Triste En Costume" | Ted Griffin | Steven Conrad | February 23, 2017
In a flashback, John meets folk singer Rob Saperstein and writes music with him under a different last name. After pulling John up and thinking nothing of it, Agathe goes on with her day until she notices that John is on the cover of the album Saperstein handed to her, who is now in Luxembourg and is peddling his music. John breaks into Agathe's house to steal the CD from her when she is out, but her daughter, Myna, encounters him. He leaves quickly, and she describes him as "a sad man in a suit" or in French, "Un Monsieur Triste En Costume." After meeting both Barros' brothers and Saperstein by complete accident on an elevator, John sets a meet with the Barroses. Using Dennis as a translator, John exchanges Edgar for a peace treaty. Tom, who has been sent by John's wife Alice, turns up to help instruct him. The physicist's wife gets a call that the bag has been lost and that she must stay until it is given to her. John learns that the woman, Numi, is a sex worker, and instructs Dennis to hire her to figure out where she goes, as she has stolen the bag from Mikham. John tracks Mikham down and garrotes him to death with the strings from his guitar, throwing his body into a river. John goes to a local show with Saperstein and performs one of their songs with him, but trails off and resorts to improvisation before leaving. Wandering through the streets alone, John sees the bag lying on the ground.
6 | 6 | "The Structural Dynamics of Flow" | Tucker Gates | Jill E. Blotevogel | February 23, 2017
John realizes the bag is empty just as the police pick it up and arrest Numi for stealing. Dennis believes he has an STD after his night with the sex workers. Distraught, he wants to tell his wife everything. Tom tells John that he has to prevent him from doing so, and John manages to convince him to not. Lawrence, Leslie, John, and McMillan employee Peter Icabod are all called in for interviews with Agathe. As John waits to be interviewed, he sneaks through the police office in an attempt to get the bag back. Myna, who is at take-your-child-to-work day with Agathe, sees him again. John is spotted and is unable to get the bag. During Leslie's interview, he tells Agathe that John did not attend a company dinner the night of the stabbing, putting him within the time frame of the murder. Before Agathe can interview him, John flees the station.
7 | 7 | "Hello, is Charlie There?" | Michael Trim | Darby Kealey | February 23, 2017
John, increasingly unstable, calls the owner of Charlie, the therapy dog he stole. John tells Alice through a song he recorded that he has been recklessly riding his bike in and out of traffic, as he no longer cares whether he lives or dies. As John continues to waste away time in the office, Steven Tchoo, having been rehired and heading towards recovery, outperforms him. Leslie demands Laurence fire John; Laurence tells him he will after the next duck hunt. As Agathe prepares to return to Milwaukee, Alice books a flight there as well to see John, unknowingly booking a seat right next to her. Steven tells John that he smells like "the last smell that I smelled," and John realizes that Steven could link him to his injury.
8 | 8 | "L'Affaire Contre John Lakeman" | Jim Whitaker | Zak Schwartz | February 23, 2017
John is informed that Agathe is coming to interview him the next day, and Tom intends to pull him out of his job soon. John sneaks into Leslie's office and steals a copy of The Structural Dynamics of Flow, a book Leslie wrote, and puts his name in it. He needs to send it to Edward so he can fake an alibi, by putting it in the Luxembourg library. Birdbath tells John that he wants John to kill him the next day at work with his nightstick. He reveals that what John put in his evidence locker was evidence that he was drunk the night he shot a child. His colleagues got him off by concealing this evidence, and the guilt he feels has led him to arrange his death to collect insurance money for the kid's family. As their flight is forced to land early, Alice offers to give Agathe a ride to Milwaukee, neither of them knowing the other's relation to John. With McMillan close to bankruptcy, Laurence appoints Leslie as the new boss. After putting John through a simple test of drawing a circle, which he fails to do, Leslie tells him he will be fired after the duck hunt. As John follows Birdbath to kill him, he gets cut off by Dennis. Realizing Agathe is following him, he aborts his mission and slips Dennis the baton. Agathe catches up to John and they play rochambeau over whether they interview today or the next day. John loses and agrees to interview later. John receives a song from Saperstein that states he is going to end his life and says goodbye to him. John goes to his interview with Agathe and tells her he's not really an industrial engineer.
9 | 9 | "Dick Cheney" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad & Bruce Terris | February 23, 2017
In his interview, John convinces Agathe that he merely faked part of his credentials and convinces her of his innocence. To validate his alibi, John write Barros' address (with his left hand, so his handwriting differentiates from Agathe's sample) and Edward manages to get a copy of The Structural Dynamics of Flow into the library in time with John's name in it. Tom shows up at Alice's motel and tells her to leave. Before she does, Alice grows suspicious of Agathe and investigates her room, finding John as a suspect for murder. At the duck hunt, Tom tags along and tells John to take care of his loose ends, saying he will take care of Leslie. Steven remembers that John is the one who pushed him, and John threatens him. Despite both Tom and John's efforts, Leslie is set on firing him. Tom suggests that John pull a "Dick Cheney" — that is, shoot Leslie in the face.
10 | 10 | "Dead Serious Rick" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad & Bruce Terris | February 23, 2017
After convincing Birdbath not to talk and meeting Icabod's demands, John non-fatally shoots Leslie in the face. Back in Milwaukee, Tom tells John he has to kill the physicist's wife. To finish up, John kills Steven by shoving him in front of another truck. John is told he can't go to Luxembourg because of improper paperwork with HR worker Gregory Gordon, but his assistant, Ron, comes in at the last moment and delivers it. The Luxembourg homicide branch believes that Mikham is the Barros brother's murderer, but Agathe is unconvinced only because of the drawing her daughter made of John. She calls a hospitalized Leslie, who tells her John had a bag with him on the night of the murder, poking a hole in his alibi. Instead of killing the physicist's wife, John goes for a bike ride and gets hit by a car. John wakes up ten hours later, exhausted, but goes to intercept Numi despite Edward's protests. John beats up Kkyman, Mikham's brother, who is also going to steal the bag, and doubles back, incapacitating a second Barros brother who is stalking him. John catches up to Numi, who simply gives him the bag, but it is empty. The Barros brother tries to attack him, but collapses. John sends Dennis into the police station naked to cause a distraction, only to find that Agathe has taken the money. Edward is kidnapped by a group of men. John tracks her to a train station, where she tells him she will leave him alone if he does the same. John lets Agathe get on the train, but before it pulls away, he gets a phone call from Tom. Tom tells John that the men who took Edward want the money. John and Agathe stare at each other, and before John can decide what to do, the episode ends. |

John lets Agathe's train leave. John comes to himself and hurries onto the next train, where Agathe's daughter is, where she locks eyes with him. John, however, has sent Birdbath to track Agathe on her own train, take the money back, and rendezvous with him. In the hospital, the morphine administered to Leslie has caused his former drug addiction to resurface. When trying to catch her, Birdbath accidentally knocks himself out. While John stalks Myna at an airport, Alice, who has a therapy dog with her, catches up to John and reassures him that she loves him. Instead of letting Alice leave, John asks her to stay, then kidnaps Myna from her aunt out of the airplane bathroom, telling Alice to pretend they're a family. Tom meets up with them at a diner and tells John he has to kill the anti-Israel candidate, Cantar Walley. Alice, furious with Tom, leaves with Myna. Alice emails Agathe, telling her she has Myna—Agathe tells Alice to keep her. Alice returns to John and Tom.

In a flashback, the PTSD stricken officer from last season, Glenn Purdue, gets his therapy dog, Charlie, stolen by Alice to give to John. Glenn and his fellow "misfit toys" cops vow to catch John. As John and Tom quarrel over who was at fault for the Luxembourg situation, a police car pulls them over. Myna helps them fabricate a story that they are a family going to Paris' Disneyland. In a video Edward's kidnappers have sent them, John quickly deduces it is fabricated by Edward and Dennis to make the mission stop. Tom instructs John to get a gun, as gun control is heavy in Paris. John devises a plan to break into the building where they keep the records of gun owners and steal a gun from a random owner. John tells Edward he knows he is not kidnapped and asks him and Dennis to come meet him in Paris. John prepares to jump from the roof of the building to the balcony—a forty foot drop.
13 | 3 | "The Guns of Paris" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad | November 9, 2018
Leslie travels to France to interview with French Detective Mills about John. John jumps from the balcony and knocks himself unconscious after successfully landing his jump. He eventually awakens and steals the location of a nearby gun owner. Tom intercepts Leslie at the airport and convinces him not to go to his interview. Realizing he has no choice, Tom tells him that he and John work for the CIA. As he does not show up, Mills starts looking for him. Agathe tries to get Alice to reveal Tom's location, but she refuses. John, Dennis, Edward, and Birdbath try to steal a gun from a grocery store, but the grocer shoots Edward in the shoulder, and shoots two off John's and two of Dennis' fingers before Birdbath knocks him out. They all escape with the gun on the French subway, where they realize John left one of his fingers behind. As they realize police are searching the train, John leads an officer away from the rest of the group, accidentally running into Tom and Leslie. Leslie, now understanding John's predicament, helps lead the police officer away. John tells Tom that he was fingerprinted as a teenager, trying to buy beer with Edward. Tom tells him they cannot finish the mission if the missing finger is identified. Kkyman and Mikham's father, Wallace, swears to avenge his son's death. Edward's girlfriend Carol and son Efram come at his request, and Edward asks her to re-attach Dennis' fingers. As Tom and John prepare to get his finger back, they encounter detective Nan Ntep in the store, just as the grocer identifies John.

Ntep shoots John in the foot and he bashes her head with a metal storage rack, giving her a severe head injury. John and Tom beat the grocer unconscious and steal back his finger. On his way out, John steals a police briefcase. John gets the chance to shoot Cantar Walley as he drives by, but sees Agathe and tries to shoot her instead, missing. John encounters his mother, Bernice and Icabod on the train. Walley's security is increased, following the failed attack. Agathe tells Alice that if she gives her Tom, John will be dropped of all charges. Just as Detective Mills recognizes John on the subway, John shoots him in the chest with a silenced pistol and flees.

The "misfit toys" cops confront John, but he stirs his drunken friends to fight them. Ron tells John that Cantar Walley is leaving at night, and that he must kill him as soon as he can. John steals a pair of earrings and drunkenly tries to give them to Ntep, whose father angrily rejects him. Severely intoxicated, John sets out to complete his mission.

Myna asks John to sing her to sleep, which he does before breaking into Walley's compound. Alice, finally realizing how far Tom is pushing her husband, calls Agathe. Just before John can break into Walley's office, facing certain death by his bodyguards, he is intercepted by Wallace, who John kills. Just before he goes in, Tom calls him and brings him in. Alice returns Myna to her aunt. John, knowing he has to flee, contacts Leslie and asks him to pull some of his teeth so he can leave Paris and avoid facial recognition software.
18 | 8 | "Escape From Paris" | Steven Conrad | Steven Conrad | November 9, 2018
Leslie pulls three teeth and tells him he now has respect for John. Alice lures Tom to John's hotel room, where the police come to arrest him. John and Tom escape by jumping from the balcony, and get picked up by Ron. Tom leaves to attend Edward's wedding. Tom is caught and detained, but Bernice springs him. Dennis, on his way home with the rest of McMillan, realizes that Carol attached John's fingers to him, which means both his and John's missing fingers will stop working in three days. John prepares to swim through the Atlantic ocean to England with his things strapped to his ankle, where he will picked up on a boat. The boat is piloted by James, a man John met while he was undergoing white torture. James warns him that jellyfish are everywhere in the ocean at the current time. Edward and Carol get married, with Tom and Bernice the only people in attendance. As the police follow the false lead he set up by purchasing a plane ticket, John walks into the ocean and begins to swim. He swims fourteen kilometers and almost makes it to the border, and just as he is about to give up, James arrives with his boat. James reassures him that he is going to be okay, which John merely says "cool" to. As the boat rides away, John looks over the bow and his eyes fill up with tears. |

It was announced that the series had been retitled Patriot and that Conrad was confirmed to direct the pilot episode and executive produce alongside Gil Bellows, Glenn Ficarra, Charlie Gogolak, and John Requa.[3][4]
On December 18, 2015, it was announced that the production had been given a series order.[5] On January 27, 2017, it was reported that the rest of season one would premiere in its entirety on February 24, 2017.[6]

Casting[]
In August 2015, it was announced that Kurtwood Smith, Michael Dorman, Kathleen Munroe, and Terry O'Quinn had been cast in the pilot's lead roles.[9][10][11] On March 22, 2016, it was reported that Chris Conrad, previously cast in a guest appearance in the pilot episode, had been upped to a series regular capacity for the remainder of season one.[12]
On January 4, 2018, it was announced that Debra Winger had been cast in a series regular role for season two.[13]
Filming[]
Principal photography for the first season commenced in the spring of 2016 in Chicago, Illinois.[14]
Reception[]

Rotten Tomatoes | Metacritic
1 | 82% (28 reviews)[15] | 68 (16 reviews)[16]
2 | 100% (6 reviews)[17] | 80 (4 reviews)[18] |
On Rotten Tomatoes it received an overall score of 91%, and an overall score of 71 on Metacritic.[19][20]
Season 1[]
The first season of Patriot has been met with a positive response from critics. On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds an 82% approval rating with an average rating of 6.5 out of 10 based on 28 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Patriot is dark, quirky, and often funny -- and although its risks don't always pay off, the series is still savvy and inspired enough to watch."[15] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the season a score of 68 out of 100 based on 16 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[16]
Many of the first season's Luxembourg based exterior scenes were filmed in Prague.[21] The Luxemburger Wort's culture correspondent noted the apparent lack of effort and accuracy in portraying the landmarks and geography that characterize Luxembourg City, with Prague being a poor substitute for their depiction.[21] He recorded that the frequent onscreen appearance of unmistakable famous Prague landmarks, such as the Charles Bridge, throughout Luxembourg shots hinder the suspension of disbelief for viewers familiar with either location.[21] Additionally, he identified certain factual inaccuracies about Luxembourg in the script, including a claim that Brazilian nationals make up a substantial minority of Luxembourg residents, when in fact it is Portuguese nationals.[21] Despite what he labeled as these "absurd inaccuracies" he recommended the series for fans of dark comedy.[21]
Season 2[]
The second season also received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 100% approval rating with an average rating of 6.7 out of 10 based on 11 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Patriot's second season is dark as pitch and ticks along to a slow-burning surreality, but viewers who are willing to invest in the series' moody pleasures will find themselves infiltrated by its scabrous humor and crackerjack dialogue."[17] On Metacritic, it has a score of 80 out of 100 based on 4 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[18]
